I have set up a network with my laptop and desktop using a netgear router, but my problem is I can only be able to transfer file on one side. meaning that I can get file from desktop to notebook, but i can not get file form desktop to my notebook. My laptop is running XP and win 98 on desktop, they both have same setting, and I turn off all the firewall. is there anyone know what my problem is? Did I set up something wrong?

To clarify. You are able to move a file from your destop to notebook, but not the reverse? How are you moving the files?

    Thanks Brian,
I can move the file from desktop to notebook, but not the other way around. I move the file into the share folder on my desktop, then I can see and copy the file on the share folder on my notebook. But when I was trying to get file from my desktop, it says I don't have premission, in this case, i share all the files already and turn off all the firewall.
I have asked ppl around about this issue, but no one knows what happen?

I had the same problem when I was setting up my nome network, I got it to work eventually...but I'm not quit sure what I did XD

Are you able to see your desktop on the network at all?
or do you mean "I can see the desktop, but it won't let me access it"?

I can see both computers on the network at the begining, then after I played around with the network setup , they disapeared. And I never got it back. The file transfer is only one way all the time.

try right-clicking on network neighborhood, and use seach for computer to search for your desktop(your desktop's networking name). I have the same problem, and the icons won't show up in network neighborhood unless I search for it.

if you still can't find it after that, then you better double check if your network is configured correctly. You might also want to reset your wireless card (turn it on and off)

if you do find it, and it won't let you acess it(access denied), come back and tell me :p

    thanks dreamgazer,
I did what you told me, and I found the computer icon. now it still won't let me acess the file. I assume that i have the same network setting on both computers, and if one can access, that means network configured ok. If I am wrong, please correct me.
I have asked a lot of ppl, but no one knows what my problem is, if you can let me know, i will be very appreciate!!

you are quite right, since you did find the other computer that means both computers are sucessfully connected to the network

the access problem now is an issue that has to do with USER access
here is a stupid but workable solution...
Change yoour user account on your laptop to any name you desire(doesn't have to have a password or not), and change the desktop user account name to the same thing, restart both computers. then try again

I have a few suggestions on your Windows 98 networking setup:

    1. Did you enable File & Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks?
Right Click Network Neighbohood -> Properties, if not in the list, click Add -> Services & add it and reboot

    2. Click on File & Printer Sharing Button & make sure you have a check box in I want to share my files

    3. Is your Primary Network Logon set to Microsoft Family Logon

    4. Is the Workgroup name the same as the notebook?
In the same window as above, click on Identification Tab & make sure it's the same on the notebook (XP)

    5. Goto the Access Control Tab and make sure it's set for Share-Level

    6. Regarding User passwords, when you boot into Win98, does it ask for a password?
If yes, enter the password, hitting ESC will case problems, try connecting now (make sure you share a folder in your 98 system, otherwise XP will not find anything)

    7. If it doesn't work, try removing the password
Goto Control Panel -> Double Click on Passwords -> Change Windows Password button -> Enter old password & nothing for the new & click ok, restart and try again

These few things should get you up and running. These are the same steps I went through to fix my brothers sharing problem between a 98 notebook and an XP desktop.

Let me know if you have any problems or if it doesn't work.

My first thought (though keep in mind it is late and I am tired) is that we have a protocol issue. This reminds me of a situation where Windows 98 has Netbios/Netbeui installed (as well as TCP/IP). XP doesn't bother and just uses IP. Win98 likes to use Netbios as the default protocol for sharing (since it is non-routable and therefore contained within the local network). So, the XP machine sends a TCP/IP message and since that protocol is loaded and bound on the 98 machine, it works fine. However, if you go to the desktop, it tried to go out with a netbios request that falls on deaf ears.

There are a couple of ways to address such a problem, but the easiest is to just remove the netbios protocol from the Win98 machine. Having it loaded is just wasting resources anyway since it really isn't used these days.

Or maybe I just misunderstood what you were trying to say in which case let's talk about it tomorrow when I am better rested. ;-)

venombite, when i want to share my file and folder on my notebook, it wouldn't let me, and said my IP is set to automaticlly. I don't really understand what it means, but I will try the steps 1-7 again tonite, and let you know, thanks
jchastain, i really want to give it a try for your solution, maybe it's about IP, but can you let me know how to remove the netbios protocol?
    Thanks guys

I'm going from memory here, but basically you go to the control panel and pull up networking. There will be a list of things that are installed that includes your networking card, protocols, and services (such as windows networking). Just click on netbios (it might be listed as netbeui - those two are really the same thing) and there should be a button to remove it. You can always add it back later if it doesn't solve your problem but the reality is you don't need it regardless.

since I tried all the solution, but still no luck. And I decided to upgrade desktop(98) to xp which is same as my notebook. and wish it would work with the same windows, but so bad, same thing, only one way transfer still. I really have no idea why??
