I have 4 people that need to access a file to constantly make changes to it. But here's the problem. These 4 people are not in the same network. For example, it's me, then 5 miles away another person. Is there a way to make some sort of file server that is actually accessible through the internet? I know how to make one for a home network, it's the internet part that's troubling. I was thinking Gmail Drive, but the fact that Google could block it is what is perplexing. Am I on the right track, or am I going the wrong direction? Thanks so much!

What kind of file is it? You might be able to use one of Google's office applications to make it community-editable (then more than one of you can work on it at the same time). You might also set up a virtual LAN using something like Hamachi to share the important file.

You are going to need file locking while someone is editing. If this is the case you need to run a server. If you just want to make the file so everyone can access use a NAS then setup up ftp access. This way you can control who has access. Or use a file sharing service.

Ok. I know what those terms are, but I'm unsure of how to do it. Sorry if i'm a bit slow...

EDIT: I read on line that I can use IIS to create an FTP server. Is this a good idea?

I'd use FTP. It's a very good idea. When I clicked onto your post I immediately thought FTP and then read that you'd thought of it. What a brilliant direction to head in.

The current snap appliance models support FTP and all current OS's (mac, pc, unix, linux) and AD. The software is design for a novice to use with ease. No cmd line stuff unless you have to do some advanced service to the unit. All you need to do is plug them in and add users and shares and ready to go.
