Network storage help

Hi guys

So i wanna share a storage between a macbook and a laptop where they both can access the files simultaneously and i came across a method. Using network sharing foldet where both computers will be able to access the files over the wifi or something like that.

I will be working with large files over the network drive, range from hundreds of mbs to 2-3gbs (modelling and large photoshop files) will this method work with such large files?

Will this work between the two os? I know the drive can be formatted into a exfat which can be recognised by both os. But through a network will it still work the same?

Also how will the Fast will the storage be or is it according to the network speed? Cause i was thinking a external sata dock and put in a 2.5 inch ssd but if the speeds are slow it wont be nessasary cause the bottleneck is the network itself.

Or should i just use a NAS system? But then again will this be able to run both mac os and windows at the same time???

 

No but it doesn't have to - NAS is a server, it runs its own system (usually Linux-based) and its job is to share files/folders.
Both solutions would do the job however NAS is definitely more advanced and it's independent. When you share a drive as a network share, the computer it's attached to has to be on - when files are stored on a NAS it doesn't - NAS is all of the time.

Personally I find a NAS very useful, for storage, backup ans synchronizing things between computers (you can run OwnClowd on most decent NASes)

 

How are the speeds of a nas compared fo a shared drive???
I have seen nas speeds to have read and write speeds of about 100mb/s. If my shared drive were to be an ssd, will it be faster or will the bottleneck be on the connection itself?

 

In theory speeds should be roughly the same - with a reasonably fast computer and a decent NAS you will be limited by Gigabit Ethernet so that will be some 100MB/s (and some change).

 

Hmmmm if that were the case there would be no difference towards a NAS and a ssd dock.
Are there any NAS i should look towards?? I dont really need a lot of storage, more like 500gb will be more than enough. Most brands i sed start with 1tb =/

 

You'll probably need more storage than you think as the NAS will end up being used for other purposes as well like storing movies, music, backups and so on but toy can buy a NAS with no disks.

I have a Zyxel NAS326 -it's not the fastest device in the world but it's reasonably fast and reasonably priced.

 

Thanks ill look around. Ill most prolly go with a the ones from wd. Or might just go for a cloud server. Thanks for your input
