I am looking for a network settings manager b'cos at home i use a cross over connection. In my collage i have 2 different set of connection settings & in many places i go, i have different settings

I am looking for an option that will ask me which network setting to use when i switch on my Wifi or a network cable is connected to my laptop. Even if its not no going to ask me, i am fine. I am just feedup of chaning my network setting everytime i try to connect.

    huh?

Can't you just use the Wireless/Local Area connection properties in windows Xp?

yeah, i'm a little confused as well.

if you want to run ethernet, plug in the ethernet cable. if you don't plug it in, then it won't be "on"

if you want to run wifi, enable your wifi card (probably a hw switch or key combo). if you don't want to run wifi, turn off your wifi card.

    maybe i'm misunderstanding your question?

Both of you misunderstood my question. What my problem is, I have to use different setting in different networks i use. In my collage, for wifi i dont have to put anything. Automatic assigning will work. But at home or my friends place, i have to put in some IP address, Default gateway. Intial set up is fine, but doing the same thing over & over is really difficult.

    ah ok

in your network settings, you should be able to run DHCP and then an alternate/secondary static IP address.

rightclick on either wireless or wifi connection in control panel/network connections... select IP, then properties, you'll see the alternate config tab

i'll just give you the path, it should be obvious once you see it...

control panel / network connections / wireless or wired network connection / rightclick / properties / internet protocol (tcp/ip) / properties / alternate configuration

you can set the "primary" configuration to be DHCP and the "alternate" configuration to be a static IP address.

this way, the wifi card or ethernet card will first check to see if the router is configured to run dhcp. if so, it will grab an address. if not, it will drop down to the static IP.

are you sure that your school gives out static IPs? that doesn't sound correct.

Till properties, its fine. But after that i cannot find "alternate configuration".

Actually we have a discussion room and there r some network wires. And each has a number. Me & group of friends use one particular table and there we have the cable few cables & i use cable "114"
