Hi all, I need some help getting some issues resolved with my new router. I just got a new one because linksys seems to suck BBBAAADDD! The new router is working perfectly, the only thing is that I don't have the software for it so I can't set up a network key for it. Please let me know if there is any other way to make my internet private, I just don't want it to be slower because of other ppl connecting to it... thanx for the help in advance.

Well I've heard alot of people say that linksys routers do suck bad. It really was giving me a hard time so I just decided to get rid of it since it wasn't worth having to reset it every 15 minutes or so...

In most routers once you login (admin), there is a wireless section. Under the wireless section you should have security. This is where you will enter your key. I would also change the def SSID while your there. Some of the new one nows, can generate a key for you. You want your security set to WPA(2) Personal (AES). I normally go to grc.com and copy a 63 random generated key (all printable chr) to a notepad doc. Do not try to type these in. Copy and paste is the only way to get it right the first time. Use at least 20 chr min, longer the better. Make sure you use the wired connections when you set it up. Otherwise you will loose your connections.

Ok, so I was able to go into the router configurations by putting the I.P address from the router, on the IE search bar. Pressed enter and it took me there, I have been trying to set up the network key, but no success. I have these security options:

    Disable
    WEP
    802.1x and Radius
    WPA-PSK
    WPA

I changed the network name (SSID) and set up a preshare key on the WPA-PSK option, it said to rebood computer if not changes would not be effective. I rebooted, came back and everything was still the same. The SSID is still default and free for everyone. What do I do next?

On some routers you have to apply the settings to every page you visit, inorder for the settings to be applied if changes were made. Most routers if you change the ssid the router has to be rebooted too. Infact I have a habit of doing that any time I change a setting. If the ssid is broadcasted that is not bad, as long as WPA security is active. It actually make it easier till you get every thing working. On WPA did you enter a security key?

I am doing the configuration wired. I just don't what option I should do it under...When I do it for

WPA-PSK it gives me these options:
Preshare Key Mode >>>>ASCII or HEX
    Preshare key _____________

    Under WPA:
    RADIUS Server IP ________
    RADIUS port __________
    RADIUS Shared Key________

    Under WEP:
    WEP Key 1 ______
    WEP Key 2______
    WEP Key 3______
    WEP Key 4 ______

If I put my own key under WEP it gives me an error message saying "shared key is invalid!" Then if I go to another option for example WPA, and get back to WEP it will have a code there... What do I do now? thanx for your replies guyz.

would not advise WEP as too easy to obtain. (must be careful to stay within boundaries of forum rules) Definatley as Blue says use WPA AES best thing to use, please remember that.

    here is a great read
