I originally thought of picking up the Asus n66u now I think I'll get the Asus ac1750, what card would work in my Samsung 900x3c?

Any card will work but none will work at 802.11ac speeds since there are no cards available yet.
Wait a while until Intel releases new batch of cards with 802.11ac support.

EDIT: To make myself perfectly clear- there are external USB cards that support 802.11ac but only with two stream connection, so it's neither nice to use nor especially fast.

That's a bummer, but good to know. Guess I'll either hang onto my LInksys e3200 or pickup the N66u then.

Is there any idea when Intel will be coming out with any?

I would assume they would release those along Haswell CPUs but that's pure speculation.

As for the router- you could simply buy 802.11ac router and use it as you would "n" eouter for a few months.
Routers don't get old and outdated quickly and 802.11ac support is here to stay so it might be a good idea if you really need to upgrade now.
Otherwise I would wait a while until more cards are available, drivers are stable and 802.11ac gets more mature- it shouldn't take longer than six months to get to a point where you could consider it stable.

I think I'll pick up the Asus AC router, reviews come up really good one it. Only real negative is it can run fairly hot.

I ended up getting the rt-ac66 (aka ac1750) and I must say, what a nice router! Easiest setup ever and a nice full featured firmware.
I benchmarked before and after, hit 15megs consistantly with the e3200 and hit the full 25 with the asus. I cant wait to get my 100meg hooked up next week :)

    That was quick

Once you get hold of an "ac" card please post here about the complete setup.

What format are the cards that go in the samsung 900x3c? I have a feeling there are only 2 antenna so I'll have to try and run a third

No- nothing good. There are some 2x2 cards but none is buying 802.11ac hardware for fun- everyone wants top theoretical speed of 1300mbps so we're waiting for 3x3 internal cards from Intel (7 series) and Qualcom/Atheros.

If I'm not mistaken, I think my Samsung Ultrabook only has 2 antenna's anyways.
If I was to get another antenna does it have to be run to the top of the screen or can it just sit in the bottom cover?

It doesn't have to be run through the screen but it would certainly improve reception (unless you will be close to the router- in this case it wouldn't matter too much)

Will any small gauge stranded wire work as a laptop wifi antenna???

Say insulated 20 or 22 gauge???

And am I correct that what really matters is length of the wire, and that gauge matters little???

It won't work- there's more "antenaness" to it than a wire- see here.

An explanation would be greatly appreciated.

Meaning that your above pic looks like stranded wire.

Meaning what is so special that it makes it into an antenna???

My point was that the wire is not really an antenna- it's just the wire leading from an antenna (the copper part usually placed like this within the screen-part). Also mind the annoyingly small connector at the other end.

I don't know why you're asking but- in case you're thinking about making an antenna yourself- don't. It's doable- sure- but a pair costs $5-7 so it's definitely not worth it.
