What are the exact IP Addresses that your computer is recieving? Do a Start--> Run and type cmd and hit enter. Then type ipconfig /all and hit enter and post the results here.

What Operating System are u running?

Do you have to enter a key to connect to the network?

I will have to get back with you on ip config, I am at work right now. I am running XP and no I do not need a key to connect.

You might have disabled DHCP which automatically provides you with the IP addresses.

Check your adapter settings and make sure TCP/IP is set to "Obtain IP address automatically"

On top of what flip said, click on the network icon in the task tray then 'View Wireless Networks'. Make sure you're not connected to any network, on the left click 'Changed advanced settings' then click the 'Wireless Networks' tab and remove the Hot Spot's network from the list and select ok, then view the wireless networks again and try re-connecting.

I have, on rare occasions, run into saved networks becoming corrupt. If all else fails, go into your saved wireless networks list and delete them all and try reconnecting.

Did you run that command while at the Hot Spot w/ the network icon being connected? I don't think so because that data isn't telling me much w/ the Wireless Adapter saying Media Disconnected.

So post results w/ the computer connected to the Hot Spot as you described in your first post.

Edit: And did you check and complete the procedures in post #4 and 5?

Hmm...for some reason you're not getting an IP Address from the Router.

It's possible you may need a Static IP Address; Or there might be MAC filtering or something in place...but if it's a free "Public" WiFi area then this type of security shouldn't be in place. Where exactly is this Public WiFi area located...at a school, coffee shop? You may need to talk to the Network guy there.

Are other ppl in the area able to connect to the network and the Internet?

I see the DNS Servers are valid but for whatever reason you're not being supplied an IP. It's like you're not even seeing the Router's IP either.....

It is a free wireless service here on base provided by Uncle Sam. I was connecting with no problems until two weeks ago. There is no security sign in and I see lost of folks using it every day. We have two different hot spots and I cannot connect at either one.

Who provides the service? Services? NCC? We have free wifi at the Tyndall CAC, so I'm guessing it's probably the same type of setup at your base. I would talk to the Services rep and see if they can help.

It sounds like a FW is blocking your port, uninstall it for now.

Blocking what? It cannot be blocking the DHCP server as he is DNS information and iconfig shows a dhcp server. If he get's DNS info, there is communication between the PC and the DHCP server.

another thought....is there any chance that you recently installed SP3 and then this occured.

Start > MY COMPUTER > choose HELP, ABOUT WINDOWS at the top. What SP shows?

It could be that you installed SP3 and your driver for your wireless is incompatible.

One more thing...did you try a release first? From the command line

    ipconfig /release
    then
    ipconfig /renew
