I am trying to put my printer on my home network. It is an HP Officejet Pro L7590. It has a networking capability I am just failing.

Also, can I network any hard drive or do I need a NAS specific drive?

    Thanks

    My bad, your right.

I am using a Dell 1520 with Windows Vista.
    I have a DLink DGS-2208 switch and a Linksys WRT-54GS router.

I am trying to connect HP Officejet Pro L7590 printer to the network - hardwire. As well as a Western Digital My Book Studio Edition II with fire wire and USB connections

You say network printer ready, does it have a Nic card/port. If so go through the config menus and assign a static IP address, outside of your DHCP range your router issues. Then use the add printer, and specify the IP address.

Some routers allow usb hd to connect and be shared, most do not. So you will need to either use a NAS or set the HD up as a shared drive on a pc that is on all the time.

Consider my advise seperate from blue68f100.

You are asking for help with two seperate issues. This is my attempt to help you.

    1. Connect an HP Officejet Pro L7590 printer to your network
Did you go to hp.com > Support & Drivers > and read the Setup Guide and User Guide for your printerr? If no, do that and let us know how it went. If yes tell us what part you are having trouble with.

    2. Share a Western Digital My Book Studio Edition II (external harddrive) with fire wire and USB connections on a network
You have several options. I don't know what your needs or budget are so I can't recommend one over the other.
    - One option is to use a router that has a usb port for hooking up external harddrives over USB.
    - There might be a stand alone device that accepts a USB external harddrive and connects it to a network for sharing. I've never gone looking for one but I bet it exists.
    - Or you could buy a NAS device that lets you insert your own 3.5" harddrives
    - Or you could share certain folders on your harddrive that's in your current computer on the network.
    - You could buy a bigger harddrive too.
