I'm currently living in accomadation provided by my company in a layout that can be compared to university halls I spose. I came back yesterday to find I could not access the internet from my laptop.

I had changed nothing. I am on vista. I have tried letting the OS diagnose the problem and automatically fix it. However, this has not worked. I have found that I can access the wired network and see the entrie network. But on the little network map it gives me a red cross between the 'gateway' and the internet (When I try to fix this it says I send packets to the DNS but do not recieve any back)

The only thing I can think of is that I have been cut off from the internet by the administrator. So first thing I tried was going next door and trying my mate's connection in his room (which works fine with his pc), and I get the same prob - I can see the whole network but no internet. I would have thought that if they cut me off they would have cut the connection to my room, but obviously its something to do with my PC.

    My questions:
Is it possible they would have 'banned' my MAC address? Or is it IP (if so which ip4 or ip6)?
How can I rectify this (change any of my addresses?)
Or does someone think its something else that is the problem?

Any help will be greatly appriciated.

    Cheers

Ban by MAC is definately possible, though if both wired and wireless access don't work I'd say either your PC name was banned or there's something else wrong, since each interface uses a different MAC.

There is no wireless network, just a wired one.

Would this mean changing my MAC address would be a good shot at it working or is there someway that the network could track a MAC address change / anything else the laptop could be 'banned' by?

if your mac was banned it would be most likely banned at the access switch you are at. I am pretty certain its not your MAC that is banned. even if it was banned at a router your still passing IP packets(Layer 3) through to the other work stations on the network. which leads me to believe that is not the case.

run an ipconfig on your computer(windows key + R)
    type in cmd
at the black box type in "ipconfig" without the quotes
    right click>select all>copy
    and paste here

    now try a tracert
    try google or something
    tracert www.google.com

paste that in here too. I am interested to see at which hop this is dying at.

Have you gone and asked the network admins what the problem is? Seems to me that until/unless you've spoken to them, you're essentially asking for help getting unauthorized access to someone else's network.

Yeah - we have to close this thread. Contact the network administrator to solve this problem.
