I have a friend who can't get her laptop to connect to the internet. The wireless in the laptop (Intel 3945) works great, and she can get online with that, but she needs to be able to use the wired card. When you plug in a network cord, it will sometimes recognize that something is happening for less then a second and will say that it is Acquiring a network address, but does nothing. Most of the time though, it will do absolutely nothing. I removed the Toshiba networking program that was installed, and I tried resintalling the network card. Neither made a difference. I am decent with ubuntu, but I couldn't get it to work in their either. I am not positive, but I am pretty sure the card is ok because the lights on the back are still blinking (of the network port). What should I try to help her get this working. All of the settings are set to obtain an IP address automatically, and DHCP is enabled. What do I do? If it matters, the laptop is a Toshiba M105 and the wired card is an Intel something that has VM in it. I know the network connection works because my laptop connects with it, so it is something with the computer. Thanks.

Have you tried letting Intel control the 3945?

That woulnd't matter. The problem is not the 3945, its the WIRED network card not recognizing a connection. As I said, the wireless works, but she will only have wireless for a very limited amount of time. Anything else?

Did you check to see if the network card is disabled?

Yep, I even tried cyclicng it several times to make sure that wasn't the case. Also, if it was the case, it wouldn't attempt to get a network address for even a second.

Well, I found a fix for this, though I don't think it is the best solution. I bu mped the ntework speed to 100MBPs/Full Duplex instead of Auto, and it works right away. The reason I am not satisfied is that a download was at 30 Kb/s instead of over 300 Kb/s like it was on my computer.
