I want to network two computers running XP using a USB cable.

One will be my laptop, the other my friends virus/malware infested desktop. What I want to do is scan & clean his hard drive using my laptop. I guess I set up his c: as a shared drive & then....? What would be the best/simplest way to go about it?

Getting a router is probably the easiest way. Why don't you try booting into safe mode then cleaning it out.

I'd get an external drive enclosure for around $20, and hook that up to your laptop and MAKE SURE AUTOPLAY IS TURNED OFF.

And if you insist on networking them, I'd recommend using a crossover ethernet cable rather than a USB cable.

I was just going to drop by my friend's place tomorrow. Bringing my laptop & a cable is easy. Disconnecting my router & toting it over is kinda inconvenient. Especially 'cause there are other computers currently making use of it.

My laptop has up to date AV/firewall/malware removal tools, so I'm not too worried about its safety.

I haven't found safe mode all that helpful. His computer currently has no AV or firewall & installing into an infected computer is iffy. I could buy a cross-over cable on the way there, but what are the advantages vs USB (which I already own)?

What I'm most interested in are the network settings which allow 2 computers running XP to communicate over USB.

    Please & thanks.

Google FTW! After further reading I've decided to pick up a crossover cable. I'm not sure if my buddy's computer supports USB 2.0
