First off - systems im networking:

    Desktop - Windows 2000
Laptop - Win XP - MCE
    Router - Netgear 614 version 6

Everything works pretty well wired. I can surf the net and share files from both machines. If the Laptop (dell e1505) is unplugged from the network cable and running on the wireless I can still surf the net over my cable modem, but i cant file share or find my home desktop.

On my desktop if i click my shortcut to the Laptop it says "\\notebook is not accessable. The network path is not found." This same shortcut works when im hard wired to the router.

On the other end if i click the LAPTOPs shortcut to desktop. I get, "\\Desktop is not accessable. You might not have permission to use this network rescourse. Contact admin..... The server service is not started" Again - this works well when wired up with cat 5 to the router.

How do i get the wireless to work for file sharing when not connected with cat 5? i know the wireless works since i can still surf wirelessly.

    Thanks

Check your wireless and firewall settings on your laptop.

turn off your firewall, make sure to enable NetBIOS (WIRELESS CONNECTION>PROPERTIES>TCP/IP>PROPERTIES>ADVANCED>WINS>Enable NETBIOS over TCP/IP

    restart both computers.

    see if this works.

    Ok - here it is.

I turned off zonealarm (free edition) on both computers and the wireless file sharing now works. It will NOT work if zone is running on either the pc or laptop or both. Is there a setting in zonealarm i can change to get it to work with zonealarm on? I hate to have to shut it off when i want to wirelessly transfer files. Like i said in the OP above - file share works fine with zonealarm on when the laptop is pluged in with cat5 to the router. And, internet sharing works great with zonealarm on either wireless or hard line connected.

Yes there is a setting in zone alarm.
Don't recall where it is because I'm using Comodo FW right now.

Need to add a rule to allow all internal trafic. Set the rule to allow the complete subnet, (192.168.1.0, 255.255.255.0) this way as you add pc to your network it will cover them to. Becides if you are using DHCP, it will be required. This is a must for all firewall's. Some automaticly add it.

Go to the firewall settings, scoll to the bottom of the page were it says entry detail and click Add. Put in the ip address of the computers that you want to network and see if that work(do this for each computer).

    thanks -

I did what reezin14 said. Now all works fine. There was a subnet already in there 192.168.1.1 - 255.255.255.0 but it was set to internet zone (no sharing) and not trusted zone. wasnt sure if switching the sub net it would defeat the purpose of having the firewall by letting in all traffic. Anyone know??? So i created the single ip address as trusted.

Thanks again for all the response. This fourm is always quite helpful.

The 192.168.x.x are for private use. You will not fine any on the www side. So you could have changed it to the trusted zone. This way any IP with in the 192.168.1.x would be allows. This is prefered to adding individual IP's. Since DHCP does not always assing a pc the same IP address every time.

I always change anything that is default, PW , LAN IP Subnets ....
