    Okay, so I just bought a Netgear Wireless Router WGR614. I am using it as a wireless router with a Westell 6100 DSL Router provided by my ISP (Verizon).

    So I opened the box and followed the instrutions and steps EXACTLY and when it comes to going on the internet I always get a "TIMED OUT" error. I've already tried restarting the modem, then router, then restarting the computer but still nothing.

    Without the Wireless Router my DSL works fine, I can access the internet and everything. My computer uses a Intel(R) PRO/1000 MT Network Connection with ethernet cable.

    Please help, this is very frustrating, I spent about 6 hours yesterday and about 2 today just trying to get it to WORK, which it still doesn't.

    Try updating the firmware on the router?

    How do you do what. Just go to netgear.com and look for downloads.

    But Nick, he just said he can't connect to the internet.

    Can you connect to the router at all? Also Netgear's support is Indian, but they're very good. You might try them as well.

    Wait a second. Does your DSL modem also function as a router? Do you get a private IP and all? If so, two routers on the same network may be confusing each other.

    I don't know which instructions have you followed exactly, so I have to ask, whether you configured the connection method, user name and password for your router, as you should.

    Wow! Sounds really similar to my set up, which works.
    I feel bad for you. I followed all the instructions (netgear and verizon) and everything worked perfectly. I wonder what could be wrong? Here's what I did.

    1. Using desktop PC, Followed verizon instructions to the letter, which you also seem to have done. Got internet access. Power off.
    2. Plugged modem into the "internet" socket of the router
    3. Plugged PC into socket 1 of router.
    4. Power on modem -> router -> PC.
    5. Open up web browser, enter IP address of router.
    6. Log in using default password.
    7. change the password, turn on wpa, mac filtering,etc. Click to apply changes at each screen. Log out.
    8. Log on to laptop, set up wpa. Surf from laptop.

    I didn't have to enter a username and password into the router for the verizon connection and it works fine. I also have the westell 6100 and a netgear wireless router, maybe even the same model, but I don't recall for sure. The desktop PC hardwired into the router required no set up beside running the verizon CD to set up the connection in the first place.

    Do you get the "timed out" problem when you are trying to surf wirelessy or when you are hard wired into the router? Also, have you checked the lights on the front of the router? They are suposed to indicate that you do/don't have connections. What do they show? Does your laptop even connect to the router? More details would really be helpful.

    Thanks for the detailed instrutions, I'll try them this weekend.

    I get the timed out problem when I try to use the internet, and I think even when I try to access the router's IP. All the lights are functioning correctly. I have the power, ethernet cable and even the internet light on (on both the modem AND the router. On the modem the DSL lights is also flashing.), but it doesn't work.

    I thought about updating the firmware but couldn't because I had no internet access.

    One thing I can think of that I did wrong was that I connected the modem/router/PC WHILE the computer was on because I had the installation disk running at the same time.

    I didn't have any problems connect up a Access Point, which Verizon also sent me (Westell VersaLink 327W). For some reason, Verizon didn't offer it the second time I order for a different house and I was stuck with the regular DSL router.

    I went on the Verizon website and they a warning for the Westell 6100 modem and connecting it to a wireless router. I followed those directions as well, but when I ran the netgear CD, it didn't connect to the internet. It seems that when one thing works, the other doesn't!

    Yes, on the modem it says "DSL router" on the back.

    The intructions which I was referring to was the one on the netgear installation CD.

    Hey inky, I never used the netgear CD. I just plugged it in and played. The instructions I followed were the quick setup ones on small tri/quad folded card. I'll have to check the model and set up when I get home. I do know I have the westell 6100 modem, a netgear wirelessAP/router and internet access :)

    Wow, you didn't use the CD? Aren't there any drivers and such that needs to be installed via the CD? When I ran the CD it went through the process of checking my internet connection, going through an installation pictorial and then resetting the modem/router.

    I noticed on the Verizon website it says that when you have a Westell 6100 there are certain steps you need to take before installing a wireless router, I was wondering if you followed those steps, and if so, before or after the router was installed? Here's the link to the article: http://netservices.verizon.net/portal/site/msa/index.jsp?case=c21176
    and also:
    http://netservices.verizon.net/portal/site/msa/index.jsp?case=c21179

    It says connecting to a Linksys router, but I'm using a Netgear, so I don't know if this applies.

    Nope. Didn't do any of that, much less know about it.
    Like I said, I'll check out the set up when I get home and post back.

    Ok, Inky. As promised, here is my set up.

    Phone cord -> westell modem 6100 -> netgear wgr614 v4 -> desktop and notebook.

    Yellow cable from verizon (RJ 45) hooks up to internet port on the router. Desktop uses the blue cable that came with the router to hook up via onboard 10/100 port to port 1 of router.

    Did not use netgear CD, just the quick start instructions. Hook it all up with power off. Then power on modem, wait a minute, power on router, wait a minute, power on desktop.

    Using desktop (or a notebook connected by rj-45) open up a web browser. Type in IP of router. Type in your username and password. Using menu tree at left choose "basic settings".

    Does connection require a login= No
    Account Name = WGR614v4
    Domain = <empty>
    IP Address = get dynamically from ISP
    DNS address = get from ISP
    Router MAC address = use default
    Click apply.

    Click on wireless settings from menu on left.
    SSID = <your choice>
    Reigion = US
    Channel = <pick one that the neighbors aren't using>
    Securit OPtions = WPA-PSK
    Pass Phrase = <some thing long ~26 characters, using #'s, specials, caps, and lower case>
    Key lifetime = 60 minutes
    Click Apply.

    Content filtering is all blank/not set

    Choose set passowrd on menu at left, then change your password. Click apply.

    Choose WAN Set Up on menu at left
    Connet Automatically as required = yes
    all others = no
    MTU size = 1500
    Click apply

    Choose Lan IP Setup from menu at left.
    IP Address = 192.168.0.1
    Subnet mask = 255.255.255.0
    Rip = None
    Rip version = disabled
    Use Router as DHCP server = yes
    Stairtin IP address = 192.168.0.2
    Ending IP address = 192.168.0.51
    Click apply.

    Choose Advanced Wireless SEttings from menu at left.
    Enable Wireless acess point = yes
    Broadcast SSID = no
    click Apply.

    Choose dynamic DNS from menu at left
    Use Dynamic DNS = NO
    all other fields = <empty>
    click apply

    Choose static routes from menu at left.
    none show up for me, I haven't added any.

    Choose remote management from menu at left
    Enable remote management = no

    That's it. Log out and your router should be configured like mine. I hope it helps.

    Wow, thanks a lot for all the detailed info. I have a question thogh.

    In order to do this I'll need a second ethernet cable to access the internet on different computer while the desktop is connected to a router that is not internet accessible?

    The Verizon DSL router only has one output ethernet cable and the DSL router hs 4 but if the internet doesn't work...how will I be able to connect to the net?

    Lets see if I understood you right- you are wondering how you will access the router using a web browser on the desktop when the desktop can't get on the internet because it's connected to the router that has no internet- correct?

    The answer to that is that you don't need to see the internet to set up the router. You are using a web browser to talk to the router which is connected to the desktop using an RJ45 cable (also called ethernet cable). No internet access required.

    Good luck and keep asking questions.

    Hey, got a chance to try connecting up the Netgear router this weekend and just thought I'd give you an update on how it turned out.

    Well, following your directions (and the directions to configure the modem on Verizon's website) I was able to connect to the router via the IP address. BUT it still didn't work, I would be able to login into the router but when it tried to access the wireless configuration page it would get an internet timed out error. I tried three times to connect it.

    I returned the router today.

    I'm calling Verizon tomorrow and ordering a Versalink Gateway, which I didn't have any problems connecting to WiFi at my other location. I'll probably have to cancel my current DSL and set up a new account, it'll be okay though since I'm still under the 30 trial period. It'll just be a hassle...plus I'll save about 50 dollars with their gateway which is just 15 bucks and works fine.

    Thanks for all your help though!
