I just ordered this router and I searched around and it seems most posts that say negative things about DD-WRT on this router are older so just seeing if anyone is using this router with the newest DD-WRT or should I stick with the netgear firmware. thanks

Stick with the Netgear one- it's optimized for this router by its creators so it offers better performance. DD-WRT offers better functionality but there's no point in degrading performance just to have additional settings available unless you really need to utilize those settings.
Here's a test of WNR3500L with factory firmware and DD-WRT. It's not the same router but the principle stands.
