My wife's desktop has this wireless router attached. My desktop is across the room with a USB WG111V2 adaptor. Netgear has you install their software to run them, you are not to use XP Pro's software to run it. That said:

    1) The program on my desktop, the Netgear WG111V2 Smart Wizard will stop working almost everytime I leave for a while and come back (yes, the screen saver comes up)...I still have a connection for a while, even though the program has closed and I send an error report, then it stops altogether and I have to reboot inorder to reconnect. Any suggestions?

    2) I am getting a new T60 notebook and need to hook into the WGT624V3. Can I just use the notebook's built-in software for that or will I have to load the Netgear program on it?

    Thanks for any help. Cory

Use the built in Windows Zero Config.

You just need the WPA-TKIP key that is set in the router.

Could you translate to non-geek talk, ha? Use built-in windows for the notebook or both?

How do I do the WPA-TKIP key thing? Thanks!

I'm not into Windows technical aspects much these days as I defected to Linux sometime ago, but I think I can suggest some things to look at...

    1) For your decktop:
    a) Once you've got your WG111V2 connected, try closing the Smart Wizard it shouldn't be necessary to have that software running to maintain the wifi.
    b) Look on the Netgear site e.g. http://kbserver.netgear.com/products/wg111v2.aspto see if there is a newer version of the driver and Smart Wizard software.
    c) Investigate the screen saver. Try changing to one that only blanks the screen or even consider disabling the screen saver altogether. Also check other power saving options as the screen saver could be a red-herring.

    2) For your new Lenovo T60 you do not want to install the Netgear software, I'd use whatever is supplied with the laptop.

The WPA-PSK key that was mentioned refers to wifi security, while you are on Netgear site have a read of WEP and WPA security and how to decide what to use.

Thanks timberwolf...I will try those suggestions. I have tried closing the Smart Wizard and it will keep a connection for a while but eventually (usually 30 minutes or so) it will drop the connection and then I have to reboot; the Smart Wizard will not restart. Of course, maybe if the other things are corrected I will not lose that connection as often. Thanks again, Cory

I not sure if I was clear, have you tried closing the Smart Wizard a long time before it stops working i.e. before you leave your computer alone?

When Smart Wizard stops working, does Task Manager show any "Not responding" tasks?

I have tried closing the Smart Wizard before I begin working. I can access the web for 30-45 minutes and then I lose connection. If I try to open the Wizard to reconnect, I get an error message that the "wg111cfg MFC Application encountered a problem and needs to close". The only way to establish a connection is to reboot.

Okay, not a very helpful error message:-(

Apart from a driver/software upgrade, all I can think of is that you are getting interference that is locking up the WG111. You could try changing the channel on your WGT624/WG111.

I have the Wg111v2 on my sis' computer; I don't have the smart wizard installed for either the computer connected to the router or the Wg111 one.

When the "new hardware" wizard popped up when I first plugged in the adapter, I directed the wizard to the Netgear CD to install the drivers. Try uninstalling smart wizard and replugging the adapter and installing only the drivers; you should be able to use Windows' built-in wireless from then.

I only installed Netgear's software because I was following their installation procedures; but if you are able to connect and keep that connection without the Netgear software then it would be worth a try. Thanks, Cory

Has anybody tried those products that "amplify" the signal? Linksys makes a plug-in module at the modem and electric outlet, and then a receiver you plug-in an electrical outlet and mount on the wall to "radiate" the signal to a greater area. Netgear also has a setup, similar to it.
