I am trying to setup a wireless connection in my house with NETGEAR wireless router. I have a broadband ADSL cable modem which accepts the internet service provider's signal input through ADSL link and outputs it to a computer's LAN port input.

When running through the autorun smart wizard, when setup prompts me to turn off the cable modem (where the later steps are to include the NETGEAR router in between the cable modem and Inspiron E1505) the laptop hangs. Initially it requires an active internet connection which I do have (with this original setup).

How do I proceed? To sum up, the router setup prompts me to start the setup by turning off my cable modem and change the cabling but in the first step itself, the laptop hangs!

    Southerngirl and other experts, please..

My cable modem accepts a two pin telephone line (ADSL) as an input. It can output the signal to up to 4 computers through wired LAN. I am using one of these and my desktop is working fine with current setup.

Now that I have a laptop, I want to make it work anywhere in my house. So, I now have the ADSL cable (2 pin) as it is to the cable modem. The output of cable modem goes to the input of the NETGEAR router and the output of this router goes to the laptop LAN port.

It simply fails to acquire the internet connection. Is the word MAC address coming into picture?

    Any ideas?

To start out with, have you got through the Netgear setup. I know in your first post, you said it hanged, but did you get it work in your second post?

Have you used this router for internet access or not? I wasn't sure if you connected your modem up to it so that you can link via ethernet to other computers.

Billionaiire, I never run the wizzard because the very seldom work. The wizzard on my Netgear FVS338 takes several minutes to scan the current setup, and fails. This is were you are hanging up at, give it several minutes to complete. If not login to the admin page of the router and set it up manually. Some ISP registers the MAC address of the computer that does the setup. So if all of the setting are in and does not connect. Use the clone function to put your mac address into the router. If you need more help just continue with the post.

I had the same problem with my netgear router (the free one from dell) and bellsouth dsl. Apparently there is an "issue" with some dsl modems and netgear routers. It took a looooong calls to bellsouth customer service and to netgear support to get it resolved.
