the router has been working great with the internet...but i'm having a hell of a time trying to set up file sharing between my desktop and laptop. anyone know or willing to walk through it? i've done all of the obvious things through windows to set up the file share, making sure that it wasn't blocked/password protected etc. but nothing has worked yet. thanks in advance.

many factors have to be considered. both computers must have the same workgroup name. You may have to contend with firewalls on the individual computers. In your case the IP address of the router is the default gateway for access to the other computer. If you give more specifics as far as router and setup of your network might be able to help

both have the same workgroup name. no security features enabled on router...so that's not the problem. i have norton internet security and antivirus 2005 on the laptop and just antivirus on the desktop. both also have the firewalls included with the sp2 update as well as any that come with norton internet security (laptop). i've tried about everything i could think of to no avail.

have you tried to ping the other computer on your network and the router from the 2nd computer. to do this from start menu select run the type cmd and when DOS window appears type ping then the IP address of the router. repeat for ip address of each computer. If you get a timeout they cannot see each other you should get 4 tries showing time in milliseconds it took to connect and acknowledge
you can find the IP address of each computer by typing IPCONFIG at the same DOS prompt in each computer.
suggestion turn off sp2 firewall and let the norton firewall handle it all. In norton internet security find the personal firewall and the tab that lets you indicate trusted computers on your network. Here you add the computer name or network address which will let you other computers thru the firewall. remember that you need to indicate the routers IP address as well as subnet mask and that ip address is also your default gateway if that info is required
if you have trouble with the IP address's constatly changing under DHCP , you can set your network up as static in which the router will always use a specific IP address for each computer everytime.
