I think either will be fine. If all you are doing is surfing the net, you'll have more than enough bandwith.

I have both and they are about the same. The nice thing about the 624 though is that it has an interface in its admin to download firmware updates. The 614 requires you to go to the Netgear site, download them then import through the admin. I'm not sure the 614 is being supported with updates any longer though.

I had the 614 upstairs in my brothers apartment while I was living in the apartment below him. I could surf just fine :) I don't think the speed of the router will make a difference in terms of surfing for you because both are substantially faster than your internet connection.

I don't think so. Your connection to th internet is 512 kilobit, the slower router is still capable of 54 Megabit. The router is not the bottleneck. Your ISP-connection is the bottleneck. That will only get faster if you pay them for a faster connection. The faster router will only allow for faster data transfer between machines on your home network.

Think of water pipes- you have a little tiny pipe from your house to the water main. Installing a large pipes inside your house won't get water into your house any faster because the restriction is the tiny pipe between you and the watermain. However, the large pipes around the house will let you drain the hot water heater faster because that water is already in your house.

That internet connection is pretty bad, who is your provider? I haven't seen rates like that from any broadband providers around here. And no, the router won't make any difference.

512k, I'd kill for that. I have 400k dsl and I pay $60 a month for it. Unfortunetly, I live in a rural area and have no other choice except satellite which is even more. The good news is Qwest is finally coming to my area in December so I'm hoping for the $20 a month plan. My speed now is fine as I don't download much, but I hate paying that much. It is like 1999 all over again.

So what would you to get 768k for $15/month? That's the deal I got from Verizon.

so the speed depends on my internet connection..can a linksys access point be used with a netgear wired router?? will there be compability issues?

which would be a better choice? the wgr614 or the wgt624? i need one where i can access the internet from my living room as well.

You can mix hadware like that, it really doesn't matter. I already answered your Netgear question.
