I just recieved a new custom built laptop with windows vista premium home 32bit. When I look at view network connections I can see the netgear router on the list but when I try to connect it says it fails. Can anyone give me some options i can take to get this router working?

Its an 802.11b radio type. my ssid: "lou" and it says the signal strength is excellent. when I try to connect is gives me the message Windows cannot connect to "lou". Any ideas?

11b..... You really need to do a upgrade. You may be forced to do a manual setup for your location. Vista does not like WEP or open systems. Works best with WPA(2). Check your router settings to make sure you are not MAC filtering too.

I do not think 11b supports WPA. Log in to the router and look at your wireless options. Download and install any newer firmware updates for your router. There are 3 different version of your router. Some mfg added it when it was discovered it could easly be cracked. But due to age I would replace the router with a 11g if not one of the newer 11n routers for future use. If you have a b/g/n or a/b/g/n (dual band) wireless card I would get a 11n router.

If I recall I do not think MS included 11b supports. But to test you will need your WEP key in the router to connect if it is running security. In not disable your firewall and see if that will allow it to connect.

Before we get very far along and to further help you, How do you connect to the internet DSL, Cable.... Do you have a user id and PW? (DSL) And what brand and model of modem.
