I am a photographer who needs to display photos on 5 laptops at an event. I am working on PC's. I am confused as to what equipment I would need. I am looking at the D700-3036 : :D-Link - DGS-2208 - 8-Port 10/100/1000 Gigabit Network Switch(1.3 lbs) (8 just in case I want to add more laptops in future). Or do I need a "router" not a switch? I would do wireless but this would seem to be too slow for the amount of traffic I get at the laptops. Thanks for your help!

If you use a switch with out a router you will need to run static IP's on your computers. You can still use a switch with a router to expand it or to add gige to devices that utilizes it.

Still photos, like a slideshow? I'd say wireless could manage it. That doesn't count in possible interference with other wireless networks at the event so wired configuration is definitely better.

Out of curiosity, do you just have the desktop as a fileserver and all laptops display individual images from it or do you run some centralized program to control what laptops display in their screens?

Clients will be going through photos at their leisure so it is not slideshow. I will be using my desktop as my file server. Thanks.
