ok, so technically you cannot have your own network at the school i go at, but im still going to shoot for it.

I was thinking of going with century link (im in New Mexico), and if im not mistaken, century link is DSL.

Now heres where the questions come in:
Doesnt DSL use a phone line for the internet connection? Basically, my "dorm" is just a room, and all i have handy are power jacks, a phone line, and a couple of ethernet jacks.

Would the school be able to see the use of my own internet on the phone line or not? With the set-up i have do i have any other options for internet other than DSL?

what would you do, if you would get internet?

    thanks in advanced

I can't remember the setup I had back when I was at Rider University in NJ, but the college didn't do anything about it, unless of course they physically saw it in my room. However, this was like a good 7-8 years ago so things may have changed.

You can't do it. It is impossible to do it from my point of view. School has it own telco or demarc from the phone company, so there is impossible for you to have DSL service inside the dorm.

Your router will mess up the network because it is the rouge DHCP. Don't take unnecessary risk please. What is wrong with the school network that you can't use? I am curious.

You cant setup a new service in your dorm, but you can surely setup your own network/lan. I agree it isn't allowed, so its not something i would encourage you to try. Who knows what crazy rules your college has.

If you're having trouble with traffic shaping or blocked sites/ports you might want to consider a paid VPN service.
Not only is it going to be cheaper than a separate DSL connection but also faster. Some $9-10/month can buy you a good VPN service.

well, one, my school is a military institute, so its not a good ol college. secondly, they use Cisco services to monitor and block everything. with that i cannot play any online games that i would like, such as Battlefield 3, nor can i log into origin.

what service (or which one would you reccomend?)

I am sorry to hear that but talking to your university IT would be a better solution in my opinion. It is just some ports that they have to open for you. I don't think VPN service would be a solution for you if you want to play game online because VPN adds overhead, and I doubt that it would work for you.

Don't forget the they block a lot of things because legal obligation. For example, if you download music using P2P program, the music company will come after the school not you.

lol, trust me, iwont be doing anything illegal. just to play some good online games without connections timing out.

The school would not allow it, and i know that for a fact since i already talked to them.

I have a wireless router in my dorm room even though it's technically against school policy. A lot people have them, so it doesn't seem to be enforced here. Anyways, I just took my patch cable, plug the one end into the wall jack and the other into the WAN on my Buffalo WHR-HP-G54. Simple as that. No problems.
