Hey guys,
I currently have a D-Link 524 that is sitting in an upstairs bedroom. I mainly use my laptop downstairs and I'm only getting a low signal at times. I want to know the best way to remedy this. I've considered getting a repeater, but the person I spoke to at the computer store told me although it adds to range it also adds a little to lag. He then recommended I upgrade the router for better range and said the Netgear 824 was great. The price for the new router and the repeater were almost the same. Anyone have a suggestion? What about an access point? How do those work exactly?
Thanks!

My advice: Go to Wal-Mart and pick up a Linksys WRT54G (v4, IIRC)...I've had great luck with these units.
If for whatever reason it doesn't work (or reception hasn't improved), just return it (that's why I recommended Wal-Mart)!
Also, make sure to download the latest driver updates for your notebooks wireless adapter... -

Floors can be hard to penetrate. I would suggest upgrading the antenna to a higher gain. Most wireless routers come with 2dbi, where most ap have 5+dbi the main reason seperate AP are better. You my also try putting your routers antenna at a different angle if vert, maybe horz.

I'd first make sure you have the latest firmware on the router (just make sure you save the settings on it now to make it easier to set up later after updating - I believe there's a wizard in the router's default page). I had a similar issue with my 624. I updated the firmware and it helped out a lot.

As said above, I recommend buying a Linksys WRT54G/S Router.
I have one in my two story house and get excellent signal strength everywhere on my property.
Very good router.
Need help. Weak wireless signal.
