    Hi,

I have a very long, thin apartment and I have a router at the other end of the apartment to my computer. I can connect wirelessly but it is as slow as hell. I want to get faster internet but the ethernet cable would have to be 30m and they are a bugger to get. Is there any other way to connect more efficiently to the router?

    Thanks for any help

What router is it? You could possibly upgrade antennas. load alternative firmware and increase transmit power (the latter sounds much better than it actually works) or simply buy another router with better range or a repeater.

As mentioned by downloads, you could purchase a wireless range extender (repeater). You can look into unidirectional antenna's, instead of omnidirectional as well. Is it possible to centrally place the router and modem in the home? Ideally, you want to have your wireless router as close to the center of your home as possible. Especially if you live in a ranch style home.

Sounds like the router has very weak power/signal output.

Look into a new router or a repeater.

I believe it is not difficult to use a repeater. It is a good idea to download the manual before purchase and understand what you need to do. I believe you would only need one repeater. Remember a repeater will put out only half of what it picks up signal wise. If you have a laptop the wireless antenna usually has poor range. There are inexpensive usb wifi adapters with an antenna on them that will pickup the signal from a much greater range.

I use a Netgear internet device that hardwires (Cat 6) into the router and plugs into the wall then on the other end I plug in thereceiver/router and can provide internet to 4 devices. Almost no loss of signal, works great.

Long and narrow is a slam dunk for putting the WAP at one end of the appartment/house, and then using a directional antenna to cover the whole house with a relatively tight radiation pattern. After all, why waste most of your power radiating the signal into the walls or a house behind you?

Not if the walls are block or there is a lot of metal in them.
Why would you wast all your power in the walls. You wouldn't waste your power this way. You would do or do not based on the information posted. A homemade parabolic reflector and using inssider would give a good indication of weather a different antenna would work. The parabolic reflector may be enough. The problem is we are not there to investigate what will work. You can spend a little or a lot of money and have success or not.
