    Hey guys,

    I just got a new laptop with an Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2915ABG.

I have a d-link router that works awesome and worked well with my older laptop.

Now I connect with this new laptop and the signal strength fluctuates from excellent to poor while sitting stationary at the same location in my house (which yielded excellent connection on my old laptop always).

Anyone know about this card? I feel I haven't configured it correctly or something to get the fluctuating signal. ALso...it will lose connection for a few secs every now and then which just kills my online games.

I have the latest drivers etc...any other ideas?

    Thanks!

Go to the d-link website and look for downloads/firmware, and update your firmware. Then go to the intel site and look for drivers and get the newest 2915 drivers. Then check to see if anywhere near your router there might be things interfering (cordless phones, kitchen appliances, etc).

Ok, thats good with the card but yes, reply back with your results when you udate the firmware.

Really sounds like it just needs the right firmware to be in working/better state with a different wireless card.

ok i updated to the latest firmware, I will have to test the integrity of the connection later...one thing puzzles me.

the little intel wireless icon in my system tray tells me the connection strength etc. I noticed if the connection says "excellent" it also says 54 mbps by it. If the connection says "very good" then it says 48 mbps by it. If it says "poor" then it will say like 10 mbps....

I thought as long as you have a signal at all you will get the same speed.

    Is this not true?

No, you can have a signal 2ft from the router and you can have a signal thats 200Ft from the router. When the farther you are away from the router, or there are more walls from the router and you, it will cut down in speed.

If you read when it is advertised it says it with an * because it depends on signal strength and interference. :(

I think with the firmware upgrade it is better...but the signal still fluctuates between "excellent" and "good" grom time to time...I just dont get that...I am not moving my laptop or the router.

Can the wind blow my signal? Can my kid scream so loud it slows my connection? puzzling.

I suppose I could go out and get a newer more powerful and up to date router...would that make me happy?

    If so...let me know.

I am currently using a dual antennae Dlink 624 runs at 2.4 ghz EXTREME G!! ohh yeah...like 3 year old marketing there :)

LOL, your router is fine. I get that too even on my setup, it really depends on all the things around you. Like say use this as an example, i had a modem by my TV, when i would turn the TV on, i saw a 3Mbps drop in my internet speed. Same with a router but not as much. As say, a cordless phone right next to a router can literly kill your wireless signal so everything disconnects. As for you, your fine and there is no need to get a new router unless you just feel like getting one yourself. Its up to you :p
