I have been using Netgear WGT624 v3 Wireless Firewall router for 3 or so months now and ever since I got this router I wasn't able to play online games, download from torrent sites, use any peer-to-peer programs, upload any files on any of the uploading sites, and download/upload through MSN messenger.

The windows xp firewall is turned off but I think it's the routers firewall that's causing this problem. And I can't find a way to turn the firewall off from the Netgear router settings.

Can anyone help in suggesting a solution/solutions to this problem. It will really be appreciated.

    Thanks

Personal firewalls can block certain applications from working if the app triggers other incoming ports to open up. 1st check your application and see what ports are required to be open. Then in the router configuration their is a section called port triggering, may be under security section. What you need to do is add a firewall rule that will automaticly open the ports up required for it to work. That way you are not leaving your self setup for attacks.

If you are playing games do not use wireless, the lag will kill you. Use wired only.

I have played online games on my neighbours wireless, and it runs quite well.
So how would I know which port is for what application? Also, what's the difference between port forwarding and port triggering?
    Thanks

you can always put the router on DMZ. Which means De-Militarised Zone which pretty much opens the router for everything coming and going.

Most game sites have a FAQ on setting up routers. Port forwarding is like setting up a server and need to point port 80 to your server. Port trigger or Application triggers ( mfg call them different to confuse people) works like this. You launch you game it goes out and contact the server it responds on a different port. This is what app trigger is used for, to auto open these ports up when you go out.

This is the only safe way to go through a firewall without dropping all defenses.

Is anyone currently using that router (Netgear WGT624 v3 Wireless Firewall Router) that could help with a step by step procedure to enable uploading/downloading, games, etc...because I am really bad at this. I tried the port triggering/forwarding on my own with the suggestions above, but no luck. The internet still shuts down when I try to open online games, when trying to download/upload or when using p2p programs.
