Hello, my house decided to go with Comcast "Blast" 50/10 package and I was wondering what you all recommend to get the modem and the router for this package?

In my house, there are 5 residents and we constantly use our internet for video streaming (netflix, youtube, etc..), gaming (online pc gaming like CS:GO), and working from home through VPN. We have around 4-5 laptops in the house and 4-5 smartphones.

I stumbled upon this modem but unsure if overkill or not: Motorola SB6141 SurfBoard

I am also unsure about wireless router. I looked on smallnetbuilder and saw Netgear Nighthawk AC1900. Again, unsure if this is overkill or not. Reviews are 4/5 but saw lots of negativity... I think I'm just looking for other people's experiences with this device.

I will most likely install dd-wrt on the router so I would like to get suggestions on both modem and router that will fit our needs.

Any help is much appreciated from us :)

It's not overkill for sure. If you're going to get the R7000, make sure to install KONG DDWRT which 100% solves all the issues noted by negative reviews!

Advantage of AC1900 routers is they have very long range and they can keep the throughput at farther ranges compared to cheaper AC routers. Also, they have powerful CPU and large RAM so that your Blast speeds isn't affected when multiple network transfers are performed (DLNA streaming, LAN transfer while gaming, VoIP etc).

As for modem, I'm using the cheaper SB6121 and I'm able to get 100 Mbps TWC internet without a problem. If the price difference for SB6121 and 6141 is only $20, get the SB6141. If the price difference is $35, get the 6121. It's up to you if you feel that you need the 6141 in case you want to upgrade to 150 Mbps which 6121 can't provide. I got my SB6121 for 44.99 dollars when the 6141 was around 89.99 dollars.

Sounds good, I will install Kong DD WRT as soon as I receive it.

I think we will be getting SB6141 since that will future proof in case we ever switch to a much better package in the future.

Thank you for your input and will keep in mind regarding the 6121. :)
