Hello I am using SBC for my internet connection... But i have a router, and its on the other side of the house and is no longer giving me connection from my desk... And also i am building a new desktop.

So basically i need connection for both my laptop and Desktop.
I wanted to know what the best way would be... maybe a router or plug it into the wall... ect...

And i need to know if i can setup a new router in my room..
Is there certain connections i need for that or do i just plug it into the wall?

SBC (Yahoo), is that DSL? Firstly, I would switch to Cable (Roadrunner). Then buy a wireless router. Connect your desktop to the router via ethernet and use the wireless connection of your laptop. So the real question is what is the best wireless router?

My vote is for the NetGear RangeMax 240 provided you don't have 802.11n. Anyway, NetGear is pretty good for routers.

All you need is a wireless router to share your internet connection. I recomend a Buffalo router.

I would see about relocating your DSL hardware to where your at. (move modem and router). If you house was wired correctly it's a easy move. If you must have it in both rooms it depends upon the wall construction and distance. Wireless can be a hit a miss game. If you are a gamer you want to be on a wired connection.

You can always use PoE if you always want and solid wired connections, if you can not get wireless to work to your satisfaction. A lot of time it takes high gain antennas to get a good solid connection.

On cable service it's the box that the cable connects to and you connect to with a cat5e. You can relocate the cable/modem box any where you have coax in the house. I have move several around for my neighbors.

SBC Yahoo DSL, you can move the modem to any phone jack that it will work in. Just plug it in and see if the DSL led is there. If it is you can mover your modem and router if you are using one.

I never have like wireless print adapter unless it was one made for your printer. Most after market ones work if the printer does not require 2way communication. HP makes them for most of their printer. I use a network laser, the best way to go if you have a free lan port on your router.

You must use the modem, phone jack to modem. Then connect your cat5e cable from your pc to the modem.

With out the modem you will get no connections. It takes the digital signal that is imposed on the phone line and converts it to something the pc can use. It also make the login connection.

Some ISP like FIOS supply you with a cat5e jack/cable. With these services you do not have a modem.

    Let's start over.

To connect multiple computers you must use a router (wired or wireless). The router will connect to your current modem. And your pc's will connect to the LAN ports on the router or wirelessly to your router if wireless.

If your provided provided a wall jack that is RJ45 (8 wires) you will be limited to that jack. If you service is coming from a phone jack, you can move it. But remember to take the filter if used.

alright so i check out my setup here it is:
there is the modem that is connected to the router which is wireless. but then 4 ethernet cables from the modem connect to this thing called "channel vision central", and that has wireless going into the wall somewhere. and we have 4 computers in our house.
So is there a way to move that? or maybe buy another modem and router?

wireless cards for desktop are normally USB, which also works with notebooks.

Here is a link for a AP http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=252287

    and http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=252318

    or http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=252286

most like the USB type because you do not need to open the PC. Another advantage is that with the antenna on a cord you can get better preception.

Linksys has a GS version of these, which will give a higher throughtput. But both must match base and network card for it to work.

There are many brands of these. These are just samples of what you need to look for.

Alright so I need to buy a better router with better range. So the best way for me 2 connect my desktop would be to go wireless? Isn't there some sort of a reciever and then I can plug my desktop into the reciver?

    hi there,
Once you get your home router in place I suggest lookiing at a Wi-Fire. I use it when I need a stronger wireless signal for my laptop's internal wireless card. This device is a complete integrated adapter that easily plugs into the USB port. It is a compact gadget that improves wireless signal strength over a long distance. It would be able to pick up on your just out of reach wireless signal from your stationary computer.
I use it when I am moving around the house while using my laptop, and when I am traveling to get airport and hotel internet connections. It always helps me get a wireless internet connection when I need one. It is really easy to use, compact, and I bring it everywhere. To check it out just visit hfield.com

You could use a device like this ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833124096) to reach your remote PC. These devices work rather well, but normally near what they say for speed but far better than wireless. requires 1 on each end.

It uses your house wiring for your eithernet cable. You can then connect a switch or router if you need to connect more that one pc.

I like the Dlink better, gives you GigE ports on the lan. Linksys came out with the GL model after killing the WRT54G buy cutting the ram and cheapening it.

Not for the desktop. The EoP plugs into the wall. You connect one of your routers lan port to it. Then you plug in the other EoP device near your remote PC. It connects use a Cat5e cable just like the ones you use with your other network gear. Works like any lan cable, just uses the house wiring. You will be required to have a nic port in your remote desktop PC. Cost around ~$10 or less for a 10/100/1000 card if you need to add one. The last ones I picked up were only $6. Most PC make in the last 3-5 yrs are equiped with one.

Most have it. Look on the back panel to see if you have one, they are normally above the USB ports.
