I have a HP zv5000 w/ the AMD Athlon in it. I love this notebook, but the one thing I can't stand is the Broadcom WiFi nic in it. It works great under XP pro, but I dual boot between XP pro and 64 bit SuSE. And SuSE is a no go w/ that nic. There's a commercial driver I can buy, but that's another story...

So, I can't really use this nic in linux. That's problem number one.

Secondly, this Broadcom isn't supported by most promiscous mode sniffers, which I need for work. (Airopeek, airsnort, etc...).

So, what's a lower cost WIFI nic that'll run under linux and that will also support promiscous sniffing?

All the orinoco gold cards I've seen on ebay are 802.11b, I would think that having a g card would be better. Also, have any idea what the difference is between the silver and gold orinoco cards? The silvers are pretty cheap.
