I recently upgraded my internet connection to a 50Mbps down speed tier along with a new DOCSIS 3.0 modem to accommodate these speeds.

Unfortunately, my current network is thoroughly Wireless-G and my router is a WRT300N, which through multiple walls fails to deliver above 10Mbps to my computer.

Since I'll be buying brand new N-capable cards for most of my computers, this is my opportunity to make sure I get the right stuff for updating and future-proofing this network.

What routers would be a good option to give solid range and throughput?

Provided you can pay that much Linksys E4200 has superior wireless range on 2.4GHz and is capable of 450mbps on 5GHz range- it has a price to match those capabilities though.
A bit cheaper but still very good are Asus RT-N56U and Netgear WNDR3700 (both simultaneous dual band routers like E4200 and both with enough throughput and wireless range to make you happy).

I realize that these routers are expensive but you have to keep in mind that you need a high end hardware since you have a high end Internet connection- otherwise routers wouldn't be able to deal with it.

How does the WNDR4000 stack up to the Linksys E4200?

As long as you can install TomatoUSB or DD-WRT custom firmwares on that router that you bought, you are good to go. I have an E4200 and I installed DD-WRT on it and its working fine for me. Its more flexible now than having just stock firmware on it.

Hardware-wise E4200 and WNDR4000 are almost identical but E4200 has far better wireless range on 2.4GHz.
All in all that makes E4200 better but it all depends on the price-tag. Linksys E4200 costs $135 on amazon which makes it good value.

I'm currently using the Linksys E4200 with Intel Advanced-N6200 wireless card installed and getting 300.0Mbps. I love this router.
