What wireless components and/or external accessories are required with a laptop to carry out these specific tasks?
    1) Transfer data to/from a Palm PDA that has Bluetooth. Is it better for laptop to have Bluetooth on board or will a Usb dongle do just as well?
    2) Send files to print - (printers do not have network cards).
    3) Access cable TV/Internet from a Motorola digital modem.
    4) Transmit music files to A/V reciever.
    5) Transmit photos to a TV.

Any advise you can offer is much appreciated!

--Either way is fine, onboard will mean one less thing to lose/have to plug in/have sticking out and will probably use less power when on battery.

    2) Send files to print - (printers do not have network cards).
A long USB cable or wireless print server ($75-125) like this one

    3) Access cable TV/Internet from a Motorola digital modem.
Slingbox! Slingbox! SLINGBOX! the greatest invention for digital couch potatoes since the TiVo

    4) Transmit music files to A/V reciever.
Something like this guy here would work pretty well.

    5) Transmit photos to a TV.
A set-top photo viewer or just hooking your laptop up to the TV via S-video would work. Not sure of any wireless viewers though.

Hope that gives you some ideas, and good luck!

    1. USB dongle or internal, both gets the job done. One is inside your laptop while the other monopolises a usb port. Most decent laptops come with internal bluetooth anyway.
    2. USB or the obsolete parallel cable
    3, 4 & 5 as stated by otakuoverlord

    Great Info! Much Thanks!!
    1) Yes, Bluetooth 'on board'.
    2) Printer at home - USB will do it.
Printer at office - it's hooked to a desktop in another room, 15 feet away (only interior walls with drywall), not practical to run a cable. I'm the sole user. Will a low-cost 1-port router/server do the job?
    3) Slingbox - Why not?
    4) DLink Digital Music Player - first I heard of it! I could have 'loads of fun' with this!! I 'struck gold' on this post!
    5) The S-video will be fine.

Incidently, how do you guys 'embed links' in your posts?

There was another streaming media player, it was a black tube with a brilliant screen... Roka/Roxa/Roxo/Something... Very nice but I CANNOT find it anywhere to show it to you. Driving me nuts, I can't find it...

    EDIT:
    HERE IT IS!

I love this one. In person it is stunning, looks fantastic anywhere you put it.

Some printer have a IR port so you can send your palm files that way. Or do it when docked.

Blue68f100 - your reference to 'docked' (I grew up on one) put a new spin on the task at hand. Why not reverse the plan and 'bring the printer to the laptop'. The large all-in-one in the other room serves too many purposes where it is; fax reciever, use by transcriptionist, etc. I'll get a single function laser for my office; 'docked' right where the laptop needs it!.
