    Hey guys,

Right now, I'm trying to transfer files from my old desktop running XP SP2 (Dell Dimension 4600) to my new laptop running Vista Home Premium 32x via a Cat 5 crossover cable (Radioshack - ~$14).

I've got both computers configured correctly (both computer have exact same Workgroup name), both I.P. addresses and subnet masks set up on both network cards (192.198.0.1 on one, 192.198.0.2 on the other, both with subnet masks of 255.255.255.0).

I just figure out where the hell to go to start sharing my files from my old one to my new one. Do I SEND them from my old desktop or do I DOWNLOAD them onto my new laptop.

Any help would really ... help. Thanks!

Did you create the network between them? Did you map the shared drives?

Are you sure is 192.198.....? It should be 192.168......

Assuming that you have a router among both computers, if both computer are in the same workgroup, then activate the sharing feature of your desktop computer, then make your file folders shareable. From the laptop, select network (you should see the desktop computer) or network sharing center, and click in the desktop computer and select the folder to import, and you can just grab the whole folder and put it on your laptop desktop, this will copy the folder and the files to your laptop.

I can't seem to find a good guide, so I'll just type this crap out.

First off, organize all your XP files together. If you have a folder called Shared documents, move it there. Right click the folder and select properties. CHeck "share this folder on the network" and hit ok.

On your Vista machine, under Control Panel, look for the Network and Sharing Center. You will need to make sure your network says either Home or Work. If it says public, you may have problems. Hit the blue Customize link and change it to home or work. Now scroll down the Network and Sharing center. You need to turn on network discovery, Public folder sharing and File sharing. For public folder sharing, turn on everyone can read, change, and create files You can keep this window open. Open a new Explorer window ( Window key + E) and hit the network icon on the left. See if your XP machine shows up? If it doesn't try to see your Vista machine from your XP machine. If your XP machine DOES see your Vista machine, double click the Vista machine and look for the public folder.

If neither machine sees each other (sigh) then you gotta download the LLTP package. Don't ask what the heck it means.

try that and lets go from there.

By his citation of the IP addresses I'm assuming that he has a network of course. So, why not to take advantage of the network to do the transfert?

That what we are trying to do. I'm assuming files on either computer are on a network share, so thus, that has to be set up also. Plus Vista can be a pain in the rear when networking with XP.

Got it to work. Transfer speeds are between 4.5 - 5.0 MB/sec.

    Only 33.1G to go!

Would anyone be interested in me doing a write-up of this for a sticky or something? It's actually quite simple, and only costs ~$13 for a Cat 5 crossover cable ... it's free if you already have one.

I know it's pretty common knowledge for you power users, but for regular Joes like myself, I think a complete step-by-step write-up would be awesome.

You are recommending the right thing surfasb, I was answering Wishmaker's quote on my recommendation which is exactly the same strategy than yours, less detailed of course :D

You answered as I was preparing my comment :)

Absolutely, a sticker would be the most welcome but I don't think the networking and wireless forum would be the most appropriate, may be in the Windows OS perhaps. And I'm not sure about this, but I think you need the moderator's permission.

I'm been meaning to do this for a while. But we recently hadn't had anyone ask an XP/networking question for a while. You are free to write up your experience.

Yeah, I saw that. I just didn't feel his IP address had anything to do with his plight :)

I was thinking this same thing after reading the question and the couple posts after it...there SHOULD be a sticky on the different ways on how to share files between two computers...whether it be XP - XP, or Vista - XP. I've seen too many of these type questions now!

And my gosh...thats the price for one Xover cable..that's kinda high IMO. I would think $5.99 or suthin! :)
