The router will be plugged into my cable modem. I have RoadRunner business class cable/broadband.

Above all, I need something that is simple. I'm no network genious. I want to be able to plug it in, do just some very minor configuring, and be done. Signal strength is less important, ease of use is paramount.

Also, I'd prefer to keep my desktop plugged in via ethernet cable (and not wireless). Can that be done, that is, wirelss router hooked up and ethernet cable for the desktop, all at the same time?

One final question. On occasion I like to hook up things with just the ethernet cable. For example, I may prefer to direct connect the Xbox 360, or direct connect my desktop or even a laptop straight to the cable modem, no router. Will I be able to unplug the router, do a direct connect, and when I'm done, reconnect the wireless router -- without having to reset everything? Stated differently, can I simply disconnect and unplug a wireless router, then reconnect it, and have it work perfectly with the passwords and security intact?

PS I'm looking at Linksys routers, they seem to have good recs.

Linksys or netgear. There is really no need to disconnect the router, just plug them into the ports on the router.

Both brands have pretty easy setup using the included CDs.

Linksys WRT54g router. $50 at most retailers right now. Easy set up, little maintenance, and if you have a desire to learn more networking configurations later you can re-flash the firmware for increased capabilities. Out of the box, though, probably the most simple router to set up.
