    I don't know much about wireless network, and I am looking to buy a wirless router. Help me please. Which wireless rounter is better U.S. Robotics / USR8054 / 108Mbps / 802.11g or D-Link / AirPlus / DI-524 / 54Mbps / 802.11g / ? Anyone had experienced either of those?

    Thanks

Well, I can't speak for USR, but that DLink model has been winning consecutively in a variety of shootouts for range and throughput. I believe the latest issue of Mobile PC has the test results.

Well, was just going to edit my original message but my cookies are screwed up on this machine....anyway...

In the Aug 2004 issue of Mobile PC is a test of various routers; particuarly 'High Speed' (802.11g) devices. I apologize but the article didn't include model numbers and I just got home...I'm too lazy right now to go dig them up.[ :D] Basically, they setup various routers and measured their speeds at various ranges (0ft, 25ft, and 75ft).

The Linksys SpeedBooster G (favored by Grandmaster 'B'...joke) got the highest ratings (5 stars) even though it had marginal performance. Its speed ranges were from 29.1mb/s (0ft) to 2.9 mb/s (75ft). Coming a close second (4.5 stars) was the D-Link DI-624 (can see the model # in the article). The D-Link had the best throughput of all models tested; 49.1mb/s (0ft) to 39.8mb/s (75ft). The article doesn't really say why it only got 4.5 stars as opposed to the 5 stars given to Linksys even though it's performace was only marginal....who knows. Other models tested were by Buffalo, Belkin, Netgear, GigaFast, and others. No USR model was tested so I couldn't give an honest opinion on it's performance. One to stay away from was the IOGear model. They apparently couldn't get it to connect to anything and it was more flash than substance. Too bad...I love IOGears ION drive enclosure. Of course, that doesn't mean they make good communications equipment. So anyway, there you have it. I would think the DLink would be a safe bet, even without having results for a USR model.

I recently set up wireless in my house and went with the D-Link Air Plus Extreme G wireless router and has been working great since setup. Set up was easier than I thought it would be. The range throughout our house is great. I am consistently getting 54.0 Mbps and a stable connection. The D-Link is also considerably cheaper than say the Linksys comperable model. I don't know if this helps you but I've had a good experience w/ D-Link.

I've been using a d-Link DI-524 since I bought this laptop in April. Good signal, easy set up. Good gear. My 'research' was reading the Sunday Newspaper ads and picking for cost. I guess I got lucky.

    First PC = Vic-20, 8" 128KB Home-Brew Floppy Drive ... Current Rig = eMachines m6805 ... Quantum Leap?

I recently bought a D-Link DI624 wireless router. As tech stuff is not my forte and this is my first router, I'm not sure if D-Link is better than the other brands that you mentioned in your posting. But I have to say the D-Link tech support is exemplary. It's 24-7 and my call was answered like right away. The rep walked me through helped me set up the connection for my notebook. Excellent service !! [ :D]

D-Link has been good to me too ... I've owned 2 D-Link routers so far (DI-604, DI-614+) and liked them a lot ... Linksys are good too but much more expensive ...
