    Hi,

I have a problem with download speed. I use LinkSys WRT54G v.5. When I connected directly to my notebook my speed is 6.5 Mbps, but when I go wireless the speed is 2.2 Mbps ( www.testmy.net)

I thought that problem was with WRT54G, but I went through all possible problems with LinkSys support and got nothing. Ok.. Then I got two Buffalo (just for test)routers in hope they should work,WHR-G54S and WHR-HP-G54,...and got the same speed result 2.2-2.4 Mbps :( I tested all three routers with and w/o encryption and noteced slight diference.

I upgraded BIOS (207),Wireless 3945ABG Network with last driver from Intel site and firmware for all routers. It did not help.

Guys, WHAT CAN IT BE ???

    Thank you very much !!!!

Well first off try doing a factory router reset. See if that fixes your problem. Make sure you close to the router when you are testing the wireless and not like on the other side of your house/apartment.

You need to try another test. I compared testmy.net results with 5 other results from mulitple googled sites. testmy.net results are way off.

That is weird. Make sure that you disable the SSID broadcast. Are your download speeds affected at all? I mean when you play games or surf the internet, does it seem slower?

Just disabled the SSID broadcast and tried.. almost the same.. When I surf the internet I can see the difference, not too much but still.. Downloading files ( movie) that's is when it is very noticeably.

What about your security? Turn it off if it is on and then test.

Do you really need your wireless? I mean, how far is your laptop located?

Edit: Also, change your channel. Make it 1 or 11.

Disabling the SSID can actually cause more slowdowns and frequent disconnects. There is no point in disabling it, all it does is negatively impact performance.

For the OP, what speed does the Windows network connection say you have. I am wondering if you are running in b for some reason and not g. 2.2Mbps seems more realistic with b. Also, are you using Intel's wifi manager or Windows? Whichever it is, switch to the other and see if that helps.

The reason I said to disable the SSID broadcast is that someone else could be sharing his connection. It happend to my cousin and they hi-jacked his computer and deleted everything. Got to be careful on the internet.

just disabled wireless card and installed usb wireless G adapter..got almost the same download speed -2.4 mbps

3 different routers + usb wireless adapter give equal download speed around 2.4 mbps when i connected wireless, and i am gettting over 5.5 mbps when i connected directly: cable modem - router- ethernet cable to notebook.

guys, who can explain what's going on ?

    thanks in advance !

100mbps will give you 12.5 mbps wired (ftp). Otherwise its closer to 10mbps, drag and drop.

Make you router/AP set for G Only. and Do NOT Connect to NON-Prefered networks (MS Zero Config).

So you are now starting with 54mbps which is about 1/2 so you are now at 5-6mbps. Then you take the over head off of that for the wireless and tcpip, Now you are 3-4 mbps.

If you need to move large blocks of data, must be done wired if you want any speed.

I am running a 125mbps 11g setuo. My max transfers to my NAS box is around 3.6mbps.

Just dissabling SSID is poor security. Netstumbler will detect the SSID if communication is going on or with a packet sniffer. WEP is a joke. WPA is as only good as your pass phrase. I would guess 50% of the people don't change the def PW, or subnet. You should always use all Printable char and max length. A good one just looks like pc crash gibberish, like this : L<A|n,pF}F>vb9\mQ%hy<@BHDW<ONuF

Are you using IE or FF for your test?

Surprisingly I found IE to be better on some sites. Which is rather odd.

What do IE and FF mean ? IE = Internet Explorer, if so, then I use IE
I've tried many sites to check speed.. yes, i have some differences, but in general the speed is around I wrote .

I think you are hitting the wireless cap with 11g.
It is running it 1/2 duplex due to the radio is 1 way.

This is where the MIMO and 11n are makeing their increase. But are consuming the the full bandwidth that all 11b/g products use. When the std is ratified, it will be required to play well wirh outher. Meaning if a 11b/g is present it will drop out of MIMO mode. Killing its big advantage.
