    NAS upgrade - Synology, QNAP, other?

    I currently have a WD MyCloud Mirror. It works fine, but I'm looking for something with a little more power and flexibility. I don't need anything more than a two-drive system and have been looking at the Synology DS218 and QNAP TS-251. Are there other devices that might be better and/or cheaper? I'm not going to build any sort of file server for power consumption and space reasons, so please do not suggest that.

    I own a DS211+ that I've had for almost 7 years and it's still going strong. I have two 2TB drives in it. I really like it. It's still getting the latest DSM versions to this day, which is a crazy level of support. I don't have any experience with QNAP, but I can definitely vouch for Synology.

    +1 for good experiences with Synology and the DSM OS (but no experience with QNAP and other brands). We have a couple Synology rackstations at work, and I got a DS1515+ for myself last xmas (and threw 16 GB of RAM in there because why not?), which is working great for torrents/plex/file server/backup target.

    When you say more power and flexibility - what kind of power, and what sorts of things are you hoping to be able to do that you can't with the MyCloud?

    I'm looking to do more of the same stuff you're doing - file server, backup, media transcoding, etc. WD's software stinks, and thanks to the fall creator's abortion, I can't map the unit directly to Windows Explorer.

    I ended up buying a new set of golf clubs that were on sale for new year's so this little project is going to have to wait until I get more funds. At least I did figure out why I was unable to map the MyCloud through Windows Explorer. FCU changed something with SMB access in W10 Enterprise, requiring an alteration to a group policy setting to enable "unsecure guest logins" or some tripe. At least now there's no more need for WD's awful software just to access my files.

    "Exploitable models of Western Digital's MyCloud devices include My Cloud Gen 2, My Cloud EX2, My Cloud EX2 Ultra, My Cloud PR2100, My Cloud PR4100, My Cloud EX4, My Cloud EX2100, My Cloud EX4100, My Cloud DL2100 and My Cloud DL4100. Needless to say, until a patch is issued, the best thing to do is to thoroughly disconnect these drives from your local area network and Internet access. But that isn't what users originally bought these drives for, now is it, WD?
