    Hi guys

I have been using the NETGEAR NAS duo v1 for nearly 3+ years and though it has been slow (accessing through wifi) it has faithfully served me, but now with my devices beginning to back up to the 2TB (max capacity supported) and my media ,documents and what nots being stored there, I am about to run out of space (250GB left) , and thus have decided on a 4bay, atom/bay trail NAS..only.

    the contenders
The QNAP 469L 650$ AUD shipped
The asustor 604 650$ AUD shipped

I do not intend to make my own NAS or re-task another device for NAS duties
I want something that is easily configured, and secured so only the household has access
Ability to support bigger drives in the future
Bonus of the aforementioned NAS units is that I could directly play media through them, rather using the Mac mini to play MKV/avi etc....

So what would you recommend, remembering I live in Australia, and have zilch access to the wonderful tech markets of the US or frankly any reasonably priced tech market

Performance-wise these are very very evenly matched. You could expect it with exactly the same hardware but not to that extent - smallnetbuilder has like 20 tests run on both and you would be hard pressed to find one where these are more than 3MB/s apart.

I like the huge fan on Asustor but it doesn't seem to be any difference - both are quiet. Under load with 4 drives Asustor uses 40W and QNAP 36W and with drives nor spinning 26W and 23W respectively.

All in all - the same hardware, the same performance and the same price. I'd still make the obvious choice - QNAP. There is a reason why QNAP and Synology are established brands on top of the hill - when push comes to shove they offer excellent firmware support, updates and so on.

If Asustor was cheaper that might have been a different story, but it isn't so QNAP all the way for me.

I do agree with you, which is why I thought I'd ask, whether or not the asustor 6 has any more features,

    The things asustor does "better"
    Is the LCD on device
Is the 512 DOM running on pcie or USB?
The esata is run by Marvell yet there is no info about that in the QNAP

I have always kept smallnetbuilder reviews in the highest esteem, however still buy used apple routers that they love to hate ;)..

Listen what do you think about the NETGEAR 314 series it has the same specs (nearly ) as the qnap and asustor and cheaper to boot 550 shipped

I have no doubt that QNAP is better in terms of firmware but 100 AUD in savings sounds tempting.
Check if the firmware on it is off-line and free - there were some Netgear NASes where you wouldn't actually log on to the device but Netgear portal that gave you access to settings. So no access to Internet (for whatever reason), o possibility to log in.

Another "feature" was that you had to pay extra for certain things- I don't remember what it was exactly but it was something like 5 user accounts are standard but if you want more you need to pay. Because it was on online administration system they had the ability to allow you to create additional accounts or not.

I doubt that's still going on considering how daft this idea was but check it, to make sure.

I am only having concerns in the fact the qnap has SATA 2 (3gb) ports but I couldn't find any detail on the others and I don't know what powers the esata on the qnap, plus I can't find a proper review on the NETGEAR 314

Well it's a joint review admittedly but performance figures are there and knowing smallnetbuilder you can be sure that any issues worth mentioning would have been mentioned.
That said it's still not very convincing -the Netgear I mean.

Yeah, sad really, NETGEAR was the elite NAS manufacturer in the day (early 2000's) but still have to hand it to them they do have a very interesting price point for the same hardware the ASUS and qnap have
