After I reformatted my Windows Vista x64 notebook, the NAS on the same network seems to wake up (from idling) at random. It spins for 5 mins, goes back to sleep, and starts up again a few min later. What is causing this? It Vista pinging it or what? And what can I do to stop it?

Do you have an XP computer that you can put on the network, so you can troubleshoot? Remove the Vista PC from the network, add a non-Vista PC to the network, and see if the NAS stays asleep.

Have you configured your laptop the exact same way as before?

Sounds like the vista discovery or keep alive is polling your network. Look in your advanced port properties. Try changing the setting that allow the port to go to sleep. Most set these to constantly stay on so it does not loose connections.

I thought it might be something like that, but how should I go about disabling it? What exactly do you mean by "advanced port properties"

Normally those settings can be located it 2 areas. Energy Control Panel, and your wired/wireless port advance properties, (properties -> advanced settings).

Pardon my ignorance, but could you be a bit exact? Where exactly is "Energy Control Panel"? I don't think I've ever hear of that in all of years of using a computer.

"Energy Control Panel" is, I believe, a Mac term. The Windows equivalent is the Power Options applet.

I tried going there but the only things I could find were ones related to wireless and other power-saving features. I couldn't find anything related to constantly pinging or refreshing network devices at all
