PC 1- running win xp sp2
    PC 2-running win xp sp2
Dell laptop- running win xp sp2
HP laptop- running win vista home premium- network discovery is on and so is password protected sharing in the network settings.
ADS tech nas drive kit- uses some version of samba. I have it set on static ip.
    Netgear router with DHCP enabled

I currently have 2 pcs and 2 laptops running on my network. I just added the ads tech Nas drive kit to my network. The two pcs have the drive mapped and see the nas drive just fine. The dell laptop sees the Nas drive just fine.
However, the HP laptop with vista will not see the drive unless one of the other computers in the network is on. When only the HP is on it cannot see the drive in network properties to copy files to it. I can however stream music off the nas drive through media center on the hp laptop. I just cant see it to copy files over to it through the network properties. Once I turn on any of the other pcs it sees the nas drive and i can copy files to it.
Is there a reason why I cannot see the nas drive when only my Hp with vista is on? I don't really want to have to turn on another pc just to copy files to it.
    Thanks

Some NAS have the capability of being a Master Browser. At least one device on the network must be.

I do not have Vista, but I think there is a setting for it.

Make sure both the Server and Workstation services are running on your Vista machine.

Thanks! I checked and both of those services are already running. Any other ideas?

I think the samba is version 1.9.14 but I'm not sure. I know its an old version. The link you posted was actually the first thing I tried and still no go.

OK. I think your problem might be your version of Samba on the NAS, and Vista's fast queries. Have you checked with ADS to see if they have an updated firmware and software for this drive?

I have updated to the latest firmware version 1.4. I don't think they have updated it for over a year now. I think you're right and I may be screwed on this. Luckily I only paid $40 for the drive kit. Thanks agian for continuing to help.
