I have a WD My Cloud 4 TB and I love and hate the thing.

It always disconnects while I am transferring large bits of data on my LAN. Sometimes certain computers can't see it on my LAN.

HOWEVER, I can access it from anywhere in the world, granted my upload and download speeds suck.

    This is what I need:

One with potential for constant upgrading of HDD. I want to invest in ONE 12TB drive but have slots to add additional drives in the future. (I have filled my 4TB drive).

I want to be able to access it from anywhere in the world and capable of upload/download

Does not have to have mirror capabilities, I don't think I'd use it (please suggest if needed) I have only had 2 drives in my entire life fail, funny how both were 1 TB drives. Should I look to have mirror enabled?

    TL;DR

Need a NAS with capabilities to add additional drives in the future.

Capable of accessing world wide (similar to WD My Cloud Login) and able to upload/download.

EDIT: My dad loves having every photo and video he has ever recorded or taken saved, even though he never access them once he tosses them on our current NAS. So our NAS has turned into a storage where files go to die and never be seen again.

Edit 2: Preferably app support for Android. I love how simple it was to access my WD My Cloud from my internet browser and android smartphone.

Are you using one of WD's apps to access the MyCloud? If so, their software is awful and could be the reason you're experiencing the disconnects. I use a MyCloud Mirror mapped to Windows Explorer to transfer files. It used to be easy to set this up, but Windows 10 made some changes to where you need to use either Group Policy Editor or a registry hack to set it up this way.

I used Windows Explorer but occasionally I would either A. Not find the drive or B. After a few minutes of transfers it would 'disconnect' or 'time out'.

It works better if I use the WD My cloud login website.

So I love some of the feature when/if it works but it's 50/50. Hence the love hate relationship.

The WD My cloud app (Android) works okay, not a Dropbox but very basic and fill most of my needs.

I agree their software sucks and a lot to be desired. WD Sync wasn't very good either.

I want to be able to access my NAS from anywhere in the world in a simple interface, does that exist? (I want to avoid FTP server)

Currently my WD My Cloud 4 TB is in Peru and I access it from Australia.

Well, there is your issue, your Carrier Pigeons are tired of all that packet transfer...

It actually works better through the WD My cloud site than it did on my LAN when I was back at home.

Get a 4 or 5 bay Synology NAS. I really like the DSM software, and quickconnect has worked great for me for remote access.

I have a DS1515+ with 5 4TB disks (4 in RAID and one normal), and upgraded it to 16GB of RAM. Way overkill for what I need, but tons of space for data, and great for letting friends and family watch the content on my Plex server.

I am too in the market for a new NAS still tossing between QNAP and Synology myself but after one that does just 2.5" drives and a small foot print. If it does Virtual Machine or iSCSI its a bonus must be able to hold 8-10TB total so i can run it in RAID 1 or another mirroring setup.

@hacktrix2006 Why don't you consider Asustor as well. These are well priced, made by Asus and the sellection of apps is actually wider than from QNAP or Synology.

Thanks for the reply and suggestion however Asus is in my Blacklist this by default also includes Asustor (Even MSI/HP are on this list).

This is why I am throwing between Q-nap and Synology.
