Nevermind... I went to Intel's site and followed their troubleshooting tips and got to some place on the computer where it indicated the card was turned off though it said it was on in device manager and in the network connections. This was in the Intel client.
It gave instructions how to turn it on(simple) then it recognized all the networks under the Intel client and then I switched it back to being managed by Windows.

I have no idea what happened....

It just happened again. And I was in a hurry to go out of town and took another laptop and left this one behind.

I just got back and remembered that I posted about it here and pulled up this thread to see if I wrote what I did to fix it last time.

    Thank goodness I did.

And I did the same thing. I found that the card had been turned off somehow though it did not show that it was off on Device Manager or Network Connections. Both showed that the wireless card was on and working properly.

But the link here to Intel's site shows what I did to determine that in fact the card was turned off and how to turn it back on: Intel Wireless Card Troubleshooter

I clicked Start->Intel ProSet Wireless-> Intel ProSet Wireless and up came the screen in the attachment below where it said in the lower left hand corner "Wireless Off" with a drop down arrow to the right.

If you click the drop down, the alternative is "Wireless On" as seen in the second screen shot.

I selected "Wireless On" and that fixed the entire problem -- easy enough.

The mystery is -- why did the card get turned off in the first place!?!

I don't remember what happened the first time, but this last time -- I was on battery mode-- suddenly without warning, my laptop went into standby mode (I think my battery is at end-of-life), I plugged in the AC adapter and when the laptop came back up -- the wireless didn't work any more.

This laptop is an ASUS z70va which went into repair last summer and came back in a disaster. I think think the tech person stripped it of everything. I sent it back in to be repaired and it has been buggy ever since. See the thread here: REALLY Bad experience with ASUS repair USA for just the start of the story.

So anyone have a clue why the wireless card keeps turning off?
