I have a new Acer Extensa 5602Z notebook, brand new out of the box. This is runing with Window XP pro. I have access to internet via Optus cable through desktop (with Vista & Norton 360). Desktop is connected to Motorola modem (from Optus) and then to DLink Wireless Router. Problem is my notebook shows my wireless network & signal strength is "excellent", but when I try to access internet I have on the screen -
"acquiring network address" & then nothing...
I have a password to access my wireless network, however, I think it is wrong. So rang Acer who advsd to reset DLink router - they said that this would disable the password and allow access through router to internet.
This does not appear to have happned and I am now at a loss as to what to do.
Is there an easy way to resolve this? I do not know the IP address of router.
I also rang Optus who could not/would not help as their responsibility finished with the Modem/ not the router. Have even considered just buying a new router and connecting this to Desktop to overcome password issue.
I am having a pre-xmas melt down and would really like some advice.

Get the manuals for the router from the D-Link web site and follow the instructions to reset and reconfigure it.

Further to above post. I appear to have located IP address for DLink (by ploughing through settings on my Desktop/network connection. Will this help?:

the ip of the d-link should be the gateway ip on the desktop. you should be able to access it via that. you will need to reset the router per the manufacturers instructions if you do not know the login info.

To reset the D-Link router, get a pen and push the recessed button in the back. You have to hold it down for 5-10 seconds (or until the status light on the front has a seizure). Once you do this, everything will be back to factory settings and you can access the router by opening up an Internet browser and typing http://192.168.0.1 and the username will be "admin" with no password. hope this helps.

I am having a similar problem with the "acquiring network address" thing, except for the fact the my router is working perfectly. So I can't acquire an IP address or Default Gateway, even though I have installed the most up-to-date drivers in addition to doing the ipconfig release/renew thing in DOS. As a diagnostic, I have uninstalled my drivers before rebooting to see if a fresh start would fix the problem. It hasn't and neither has a reformat. I am using SP2.

Does anyone know what the issue is here? Thanks in advance for your help!

Only use the min services needed for networking.
    Client for Microsoft Network
    Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
    File and printer sharing (optional)
    QoS (Optional)

Delete your wireless location, re boot, then try.
