I think this is due to a outdated router but I'm not sure(it's 5 years old). My laptop can access the internet with slow speeds. Sometimes the connection just stops on downloads. I have to load up another webpage to get it to start again. My friend also has this problem with my network. My other laptop however has no problem since it has the router's network card.

Well, I am sure that after five years, it might be time to consider another router. I think your router might be in its last stages before it dies if everyone is having a problem with the network.

I use a external linksys network card for my older laptop which does not have a built-in wireless card. This card came with the router I purchased.

Do you have security enabled on the router, and are you otherwise sure that someone isn't mooching off your wireless network?

EDIT: Also, what is the new laptop, and what OS is it running?

The best to do is to look at the paremeters on the nic card of your old laptop and copy them into the other's computer nic adapter.

I don't have security enabled, but I'm sure people aren't mooching off my network as there are better networks to use and my older laptop has good speeds on the network.

I use a T61p Thinkpad with Vista Home Basic.

I'm a newbie at these things. Could you explan how to do this? Thanks for your advice.

Go to device manager and open the laptop network adpater and put the parameters you got from the other network adpater.

Press start, right click on my computer, select properties, and open the device manager and look for the tab hardware, then look for the network adapter and check for your adapter. Then enter the same parameters than your other computer.

Alright, I got to the device manager and opened up the specific network adapter 's properties. I then try to copy the paremeters in advance setting, but the two network adapters have different options to enter the parameters in. For example, my old laptop's card has an option for "channel" which is missing in my new laptop's card.

What OS is your new laptop?

Try to copy as much as you can and see if it works, otherwise we gonna have to do it manually item by item.
