EDIT: Make that an Arris Touchstone Telephony Modem. Stupid thing...

I have a Netgear WGR614v5 and I just updated the firmware on it and that deleted my settings on the router. So, I started to re-enter the settings and instead of ever update the router, the webpage just said that it couldn't connect to the site. So I've tried unplugging and restarting my router, but I just can't get any webpage to come up, not even 192.168.1.1 (the netgear page) nor routerlogin.net. However, on my laptop i can still see a Netgear router with full signal strength - so I assume it's mine, but no connection is possible. Also, from the desktop connected to the router directly just says Local Area Connection 2 100 Mbps - which is definitely not my internet connection - and the internet still doesn't work.

So, that leads me to believe it's the Aries thing that acts as the modem. I'm horribly unfamiliar with the thing because it had to be professionally installed. But it hooks up our internet and telephone. It's called a Touchstone Telephony Modem. Now, the aries was connected directly to the computer and all of the sudden AIM connected, so I quickly reconnected the router and it's all completely back down again. What on earth could be the problem? Any ideas? I'll have to call tech support tomorrow if the ruddy thing doesn't fix itself because I'm clueless.

I would start out by testing your modem to see if it is the problem or if the router is. To do this, unplug the ethernet cable that goes from your modem to router from the router, and plug it into your desktop or laptop. If you can connect to the internet and do normal tasks on it, then the problem is with your router.

I can't really tell from your post on how you connected to your router to re-enter the settings in. I have the same router, and the last time that I did an update on the firmware, it was really picky. Once your firmware is updated, the router should reboot itself and it deletes all of your previous settings. After it reboots, you'll need to connect to it via ethernet cable and either use the disc that came with your router or go to the 192.168.1.1. If that loads, the default username is admin and the default password is password.

That should get you into your router setup assuming that your router is good and everything is working fine.

This happened to me when flashing my linksys router. I fixed it by reflashing the router a 2nd and 3rd time until it worked.

Well, everything is still down. Like I said before, the internet worked once connected directly from the modem to the computer... and it's working like that again... so I guess the problem is, indeed, with my router. However, as soon as I connected my modem to my router and my router to my computer, I can't get anywhere. Not even the 192.168.1.1 works. Meanwhile, on this compuer, I can see the router as NETGEAR. So where is the problem? Any why can't I connect to my router wirelessly or directly to get back in and reflash it or whatever I need to do. There isn't even a reset button anywhere on the router!

To let you know what I did, was I went to the router via the 192.168.1.1 and to the Netgear website where I downloaded the firmware for it. Then, on the router page I installed the firmware and it told me to then go and hit a erase settings on the router. So I did that, and since then it's been completely unaccessable. And, of course, the router is more than 90 days old, so I can't even talk to Netgear about it without paying premium prices.

I would check all of the cords and make sure that everything is plugged in correctly. You should be able to see your internet light on the router.

You can reset the router. On the backside of the router, next to the antenna, you'll see a tiny whole. You'll need a safety pin or toothpick to push it in, and hold it for 10 seconds. This should reset your router, so hopefully you'll gain access to 192.168.1.1 page, and be able to enter the default username/password in.

Yeah, I found the reset button and now I'm connected to the webpage. And it was trying to update my settings and I got the "Could not connect to the internet" page where it tells me possible incorrect config settings, possible incorrect network restart sequence, and possible smart wizard detection failure.

What a pain in the butt. I just don't know what's happening because last time I went to the possible smwart wizard detection failure webpage where it took me into the router page, but when I put in my old settings it didn't work, and I ended back at square one.

Both the router and the modem needed to be reset (duh...). Though, I there were bits of problems with that. I couldn't for along time find the one on the Netgear router because the whole back of it is perforated metal, only hidden in one of the holes is an unmarked reset button. And then the modem had to be reset too, but I was worried about cutting power to that (and I had tried, but it had battery backup) because it is also programed for our main phone line, so I didn't know if that'd mess anything up.
