How do you kill them so I get to keep just one? I don't find an option to kill other broadcasts on the www.routerlogin.net. Netgear WGR614V4 router btw.

    Thanks in advance.

is that a dual band router? i mean with 2 separate radios one for n and one for abg? if so that would be why

Well, the router is about 4 years old, so it wouldn't be N capable anyway. ABG are all it does....I probably screw up in the setup on my dell desktop and now my HP laptop picks up several Netgear networks but only one works. I cannot delete other non-working Netgear networks from my laptop and I don't see the option to kill them on the Dell desktop end either.

    Vista SP2.

Now i am picking up 2 to 3 Netgear networks...I am sure some of those are duplicated. There is a red cross on those that don't work but I wish they don't appear at all as a network.

One hint is that I was trying to add a password (WEP or WPA) to protect the network but for some reasons had trouble connecting after setting up the password, so I revert it back to an open network, but those non-working WEP and WPA networks still being picked up by my laptop.

Ok, I will rename the network and see what's what.

By the way, Which is preferred between WEP and WPA? Whenever I try to set up a password, Netgear wants to encrypt...how do I keep it the way I want it?

Do a rt click and del on the connections you do not want.

Select WPA(2) AES for security, min 20 chr all printable is best. I use the key generator on www.grc.com and copy it to notepad doc. Then select what length you need and save to the pad. I always use copy paste to enter keys.

Do all of your admin on a wired connection. Wireless connections gets dropped during setup due to mini boots the routers do.

also if you had a issue as you said i would do a 30-30-30 reset on the router. hold reset for 30seconds pull power for 30seconds WHILE STILL HOLDING the reset button then plug back in the power and CONTINUE to hold the button for another 30 seconds this will clear out the nvram completely

Well, I figured out where to delete redundant networks on the laptop. In terms of speed, it's very slow...I got 700k/1.5mb on my laptop, but on the desktop (wired connection), I got 7.5mb/3.0mb. It's cable connection so i don't always get the same speed, but the difference is huge, it's open network, it should have the least amount of overhead.

use something like InSSIDer to ident the wireless nets in your area.

Then, change the default channel of YOUR router to something that isn't so crowded.

Most people leave their routers on default channel 6. There are (depending on what country you are in) at least 14 channels to choose from.

I left it at default channel, 11, why would this be a problem? We only have one big LCD TV, a couple laptop, no landline phone....unless you are talking about interferring with neighbors equipments.

It's the neighbors and anyone else around you say within 100 meters or so (assuming conventional wood-stick construction).

Just grab a lesser used channel as default.
