    Hi,
my notebook came with a Atheros 5006eg mini Pci-e card. I 've always had problems connecting to the wireless in public places, like college, where other people were easly connecting I was struggling.

So i switched my brother's Atheros 5700eg with mine and everything was better.
Testing it out i realized that where the atheros 5600 couldn't find any wireless lans the 5700eg could find my home wireless with low signal, could connect and the connection was stable.I made this test where I always work on my laptop and the atheros 5700 gave the same performance as the intel base laptop (with intel wireless) used to give.

    I have two doubts :
    • there sould be lots of people around with the atheros 5600eg , am i the only one who think that sucks? I'm starting to think that is just mine that is faulty but is much more likely that a faulty card will not work rather than working bad.
    • looking for a replacement I found out that these minipcie are expensive and a cheap one is the 5005 with extendend range.....should i look for a later model like the 5008 or the 5005 with xr should do the job?

P.S. I couldn't find ant seller in italy....
P.P.S. This is the last time i buy a packard bell

Gasparov, do you have Windows or the Atheros client running your 5006eg card? I have an AR5006EGS card in my Dell E1705 laptop, and it works great. I'm using the Atheros client and 5.3.0.56 drivers. You can get Atheros drivers and the client here: ftp://lizzi555.dyndns.org/Download/WLAN/Atheros/

    Hi, thanks for the answers...

I don't think is driver related because the problem is still there with the madwifi drivers on ubuntu and gentoo linux... it's actually pretty weird.I also use the 5.3.0.56 drivers that work for both the 5006 and the 5007.(I didn't reinstall the drivers after I switched the cards)

So i changed my 5006eg with my brother's 5007eg (on acer 5100) and we both improved our reception, he did improved slightly (75% to 80%...it could be just a change of weather conditions :) ), i improved big by beeing able to connect to wireless lans I couldn't even seen ( as in first post).

It seems that this is gonna be the definitive solution for a while but i still ask myself what is the issue. Maybe the antennas of my packardbell work well with the 5007 and not well with the 5006 while the ones in my brother's laptop work well with both....can't really say.

For now the 5006 rocks in his laptop (runs cooler)....so it seems that it's just on mine that it doesn't work well.

Still much lower compared to Acer 5100, Dell Vostro or my previous HP on intel.
