Motorola SBG6580 / Comcast SouthEast US/ Slow wired

My modem from comcast (southeast US service area) died on me today. Figured it was time to go buy one as I had been meaning to but put it off. Go the Motorola SBG 6580. Getting awesome WIRELESS speeds of 60mbps down, but only getting around 9mbps WIRED. Yes, WIRELESS is faster > than Wired. Any help? I file this under First World Problems. I usually run one computer wired and the other wireless.

It sounds like your Ethernet port is running at 10 Mbps. Is there any setting on the modem to run the port at 1 Gbps. Also, is the device that is connected configured to run at 10 Mbps only? Check both Modem and your devices and see if you can find the setting that allows them to run at max throughput. Usually, most cheap laptops a couple of years ago have at least 100 Mbit Ethernet. You can start by going to advanced settings for your Ethernet NIC in device manager.

 

Thanks all. Turned out it was a bad ethernet cord. Getting upwards of 70mbps now wired!

 

I have the same modem through Time Warner, and what I don't get, I have a 50mbit connection, I can regularly download at 4.3mB/s, wireless or wired.
But I can only transfer from one computer to another at BEST around 2.3mB/s! Even when one computer is wired, the other is wireless..

I'm assuming the router that's built in is just junk.. I just don't understand how it could be THAT slow!
IT transfers fine when both computers are wired, but I hate dragging out a wire almost daily to transfer media

 

This doesn't make much sense. Let's not confuse switching with routing. When you are downloading something from the Internet- it's routing, when you transfer something from a local computer to another one it's switching.
It's routing that has lower throughput than switching (with some exceptions that do not apply here)- so it stands to reason than downloading to a computer connected via Wi-Fi would be slower than doing the same thing in the same direction on local network. But somehow it isn't in your case.

Also- it's weird that it doesn't go above 2.3MB/s which happens to be a practical limit for 801.11g. Are we talking about the same laptop for both situations and the same direction (as in laptop is the receiving device in both cases)?

It runs about the same both directions, even if its small files, or one large file. I 'may' have broke 2.3 a few times, but I never get above 2.5-2.6mB. My laptop connects at 144mbit according to network status, The other one connects at 72mbit.

With the other laptop wired, I have tried THREE wifi adapters on my laptop (I have external usb adapters), and still no difference. My laptop has a intel 6205 internal adapter.

I really don't understand why it could be so slow on transfers, when downloads online go 4.3mB average. I already plan on 'eventually' getting a new wireless router anyways, just so I can transfer much faster from my laptop to/from the network.. But don't have the funds right now. I've changed multiple settings on the router, played around, still nothing. Tried 2.4ghz as well as 5ghz
