I am going to use DSL Extreme and want to purchase my own modem. They give this info on there web site about using your own modem.

For ATM circuits you must have an ADSL modem that supports rfc1483 bridge mode. SDSL modems are not compatible. Frame relay circuits will only work with Fujitsu DSL modems. Regular 56k dial-up modems will not work as a DSL modem. If you want to use a modem from another source, please check with us first to determine compatibility.

I want to purchase my own modem so I can make sure I have good equipment. So does anybody have a suggestion on a modem. The service I am purchasing will have a potential of 7100kbs download and 710kbs upload I will be hooking it to my router.

I've used the Actiontec GT724WGR in the past. It's a decent ADSL Modem that does the job. Supposed to be 'Universal' and all so you shouldn't have any issues setting it up.

I checked the manual and it does support RFC1483. IIRC the only thing I had to set in the modem to get it working with my ISP was to get the exact VCI and VPI numbers that my ISP uses and enter that in the modem. Without that info. you'll have issues getting it working.

Other than that as I said it does the job but lacks some features that I would have loved to see it have; esp. when it comes to QOS/Bandwidth priority limiting configurations etc. It doubles as a Wireless G Router...links below.
