ive been using bell sympatico for quite a while now and its been very reliable. however, every now and then (maybe 2-3 times a day) the connection on my laptops wireless thing is dropped, along with the other 3 desktops in my house. my setup is this: phone line connected to a modem, modem connected to wireless router and ive found that in order to get the connection running again, i have to turn the power to the modem off for a couple minutes, then back on again. it is VERY annoying and was wondering if anyone would know anything about this. my opinion...modem is too old, and the fact that i leave it on day and night might be a factor?

is it possible to upgrade the firmware on the modem. That might resolve the issue.

I think what cycling the power is doing is just restarting the DHCP and reassigning IPs

Try typing your modem into google with a search. We dont know your modem so i couldn't give you a link but just types its name and "frimware" next to it.

I would be wired just to make sure. Is this a ISP's Modem? If so go to them to get it fixed and save you hassle. If not, then try the firmware. Im sure there is a model number around on it somewhere.

ok found it is a speedstream 5260

After doing some searching, it looks like the 5260 model can be upgraded to a 5660 router through some firmware updates and such. However, is there any way I can just install new firmware and be done with it? I do not know how to install firmware via changing ip addresses and all that dhcp stuff...can anyone help??

    there is also another number... is is 120 - 5260 - 117

I haven't heard that brand in years. My brother had one that was supplied with his dsl service. When the company sold out they sent him a new modem. Saying they didn't support them.

As for firmware upgrades. Some require a special software to install it. Most are supplies with the firmware upgrade. All setting will be wiped clean in the modem. Some allow a way to save and restore your current settings.

I am thinking something has degraded on your dsl line. I had this happen to a friend of mine. They sent a tech out to check the line and found the signal was marginal at best. They were able to boost the signal and the problem went away.

thanks blue, but I think I am too technically challenged to even take a stab at it.

I called Bell, and they agreed to send me this new modem/wireless router in one. One time charge of 80 bucks, and after all of these disconnects, definitely worth it. Has anyone tried one of these units? My current wireless router is a Linksys http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/pr...angid=EN&sku_id=0665000FS10043626&catid=19994

I hope I am not sacrificing any speed, but all I want is a decent connecction!!

Oh and I forgot to ask something. I have 2 other desktop computers running a wireless connection via the Linksys wireless adapters. WIll these adapters work with the Bell combo router?
