    Hi,

I am trying to set up a mobile broadband connection for a friend. The indicator light on the modem shows that it is picking up an HSDPA signal but it fluctuates between 3G and HSDPA. It holds each for about 30 secs in turn.

A web page takes minutes to download which indicates that it is using the 3G connection rather than the HSDPA. The connection is rated at 3.6 mbps but tests on download speeds indicate that 300kbps is nearer the mark.

Would a strap-on antenna make a significant difference?

Is it possible to configure the modem to ignore the 3G signal?

The modem is supplied with two connection cables. So far I have only tried the single USB lead. Would using the dual USB lead help?

I have tried with two differently configured laptops without ant success. This seems to indicate that it is a modem/signal problem rather than the laptop.

Running XP, IE7, the modem is an Huawei E220.

    Any thoughts?

    Many thanks

    Peter

    Hi,

The location is Alverton in Nottinghamshire. According to the coverage map the signal is OK and the control panel shows that HSDPA is connected. The status panel shows a speed of 3.6mbps.

The modem comes with two connecting leads, one of which has a dual USB connector. I haven't tried the dual lead yet. The reason for the dual lead is to supply extra power as one USB port may not provide enough power. I discovered the reason after trying unsuccessfully to connect. Do you think this might be a reason for dropping the HSDPA connection? ie lack of power.
