I've tried my very hardest to disable all network and media sharing on my computer, but no matter what I do it still shows up as a media device to other people.

This is only a home network, but I like to keep myself to myself, so ideally I'd like to be completely hidden on the network (though obviously someone could find out I'm there if they really wanted, by simply pinging my IP). Anyway, what I would like would be so that when you go in the network tab of windows explorer I at the very most appear as a computer with nothing shared. At the moment I appear as a media device only, though no shares are present that I know of.

So far I've disabled media sharing and network discovery, but it doesn't seem to have had any effect.

I realise this post is a little inconcise, so if anything needs explaining then just ask. This just strikes me as one of those things where it's a common problem which is well known and has a solution.

Out of curiosity, is windows media player opened when you see your computer as a media device or is it permanent?

Just checked. Yes, even with media player closed it still shows up.

Hmm, then i am out of ideas, i noticed that with homegroup disabled on my computers and media sharing turned off, they would only appear as media devices if i had WMP running. Haven't looked into it more than that, have you tried accessing your computer as a media device from another one on the network? It's possible it shows up, but isn't accessible.

Just tested and with streaming disabled, i cannot access my computers even though they appear. The IP is listed in the device properties though. I have all options disabled aside from password protected sharing and no homegroup what so ever. Have you tried turning off all file and printer sharing options?

May want to check your firewall settings or file permissions.
